not a firefighter per se, but i am highly qualified as a firefighter, from serving on ships. i generally serve in command and control positions and not on the hose, but i know how to if need be.

ever do the NFPA training and all that or does the navy do it's own thing? I would imagine that ships have a lot of differences from structural fires. Have you seen a lot or are they pretty rare?

navy runs all of its own, but still similar. big propane powered structures that catch all on fire. we focus mostly on B fires, but i have mostly seen C fires. we trian for the B's because they can cause the most damage. i don't want to say they are common, but i have seen several fires on my ships.

Here in this area with so many chemical tankers you will always see a lot of focus on fire prevention. I have no clue on the fighting of it but I am subjected to really strict regulations to prevent it. For example safety shoes with steel in it are forbidden and so on. Lighters need to be turned in at the gate, only matches are allowed in some cases to light your cigarette in specially ventilated and closed off area's (kind of like closed bus stops).

The neighbours of our shop are the highly specialised fire department for maritime / chemical fires. I think they got about 12 trucks of various shapes and sizes. They practice daily and can be everywhere in the port of rotterdam within 15 minutes. Not all cars, but some of them are specially constructed too for high speeds. I once followed a DAF which did around 150/160 km/h. My Fiesta had some hard work on it.

These firefighters are also paid by the companies in the Port instead of the government, however they do wear the regular government fire fighters colours.

I'm volunteer too, but I just got FF1 this summer. It's fairly easy but lots of hours. Where do you run?

But seriously, I somehow do not see being a cop in Canada as such a dangerous profession... I'm near Philly and I could understand not wanting to be a cop in a city like that- we've had far too many killed in recent years

I recommend volunteering if you have an interest. In my region, cities are paid and everywhere else is mostly volunteer, but that varies. And many volunteer departments need members. City departments on the other hand can be very hard to get into. My company allows people to come to the station for a day and do some of the training, use gear like air packs and rescue tools, and ride along if we have any calls, to give people an opportunity to see what it's like.

The RCMP is desperate for recruits, CG. They'll even take cowards! All you have to do is pass a short written test, pass a physical test, then you go on to the polygraph test, and as long as you don't try to bullshit you're good to go. They travel in pairs most of the time, and visit Tim Hortons and Starbucks often, so you should be safe from harm's way. ... aside from maybe calories' harms way.

well, im working in the mechanical department (in a big government building). we have all the foundation of fire fighting machines such as pumps, compressors and high pressure tanks, which i must take care of them. the pumps feeds the red boxes around the building, the pressure tanks feeds the sprinkles. thats beside the other mechanical machines for the building needs.
thats makes me a fire fighter? lol not really.
