Hmmm Lively discussion that appears to have ended on a sour note.

I'll second that. JT has a lot of experience and I know I have learned a lot viewing his submittals and reading his comments. Yes, he's a pro, yes he has the opportunity to shoot cars and places most of us can't. So what, he earned it. He is well respected in the Automotive Photography community. Did ya' learn anything about photography, cars or from his other posts in General Photo Comps? His posts in the General Photo comps. were from his back yard with a 5 year old 5MP camera. I don't take constructive critique as a personal attack on me or what I have submitted. I may take it with "a grain of salt" but never personally. I'll miss trying to jump over the bar that he raised.

These weekly competitions should be fun and a learning experience and should not be taken too seriously. IMHO I believe everyone wins participating in these competitions. I know I do.
First do these comps make you go out and shoot and not just dig into your archives? If they make you go out shoot, maybe trying something different, YOU WIN.
If after the voting did you get more votes, hopefully for the right reason, than a member whose work you admire or like? If so, YOU WIN.
If after the voting did you get fewer votes than a member whose submittal you thought wasn't as good? If your reaction is: I'll show that blankety blank guy who always wins and then go out and try harder. If so, YOU WIN
Do you read the advice, critique and comments from other members and try to apply it the next time you go out and shoot? If so, YOU WIN

    My 2 cents 2 late.

Hegg's: I like it. I think it captures the mood and atmosphere so very well. Something still bugs me about it though. I would've done a slightly tighter crop to eliminate the light to the left of the taxi, as well as the horizontal line at the bottom. As it is now, I find them distracting. Yes, it would've pulled the taxi a little bit further out to the left, but it would actually center it better on the leftmost vertical thirds line. I would have also upped the contrast a bit.

Again, please don't feel offended. It's my purely subjective opinion, but if I have offended anyone I do apologize.
Thanks Rasmus, These are exactly the kind of comments and critique I am looking for. I'll try your suggestions.

Yeah this isn't cool by any means. I have learned more about photography from JT than I have learned from any other professional photographer. Im sorry to say this but... this forum just wont be the same without Thawley.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but do you find inspiration in the works of others or do you go your own way?
If I'm feeling particularly uninspired or stagnant, I'll look around at others' photos or if I'm just bored, but I rarely look at them with the intention of "inspiration". If I do, I try to look at classic images or non-automotive photography to draw inspiration from. The last thing I want to do is ape someone's style/look. That's not to say I don't find other people's work inspiring.

So wait, did JT actually remove all of his images on top of leaving? They've all disappeared, and I find that to be very obnoxious and childish. It kind of ruins the threads where he won.

I can't go through everything retroactively, however for the competitions he's won this year, I'll be awarding the entrants with the next highest amount of votes. I don't think his wins deserve to be left up there if he's not going to leave the attachments posted at the very least.
i was waiting on a moment, but the moment never came. all the billion other moments, were just slipping all away. i must have been tripping, we're just slipping all away. just ego tripping.

Yeah, I can understand if he wants to leave. That's his own choice. However taking away the images has now left a bunch of blank spots all over certain threads, and that annoys me personally.

John, I know you are reading this. I appreciate your work, and the little bits of dialogue we've had, but removing the images is just petty. I am disappointed.

    seconded.
I mean, it's not that we can't view your pictures, your website is still there, and removing them because, maybe, we are not worty, well, that's too much.
most of us are no pro, I'm no pro, and you can't pretend everyone is a pro, maybe not taking pictures, but judging them.
neither I'm into photography, or even interested in being into it, as much as you are, I just enjoy taking them, and looking at them. You are perhaps taking it very seriously, and it's fine, it's your job and you make your living out of it, but it's unfair to pretend we have to adopt the same approach.
it just kills the amateurish point of view.
as if I pretended my cousin knew as much about cars as I do when she bought her Yaris.
I hope you come back, you photographs are excellent, that's for sure.

They're his images, and it's his business.

But yeah, it's petty and in bad form.

    nice work people!

not once did i think there was anything condescending in the way JT spoke to any member in this photography forum. you call him petty for taking his pics - how childish. i left sc.net because of the behaviour of certain members (including the moderating team). he can do whatever he likes with his pics, so show some maturity and pull your heads in.

there was no lack of reason in what he said throughout this forum, yet he was chastised occasionally for offering his thoughts. it shows a lack of respect and principle, some of the key features that this forum was established around. it is disappointing to see. to JT thank you for your contribution to this forum

i no longer find this Photography forum enjoyable to view and partake in, and that is a shame because there is quality work that appears in here

I agree. JT always spoke his mind and did it so that we can all learn from it. There is no use in telling people what they did right if you dont tell them what they did wrong. Thats how you learn.

I have said this before and I will say it again - There are some members on this forum that are over-assertive and over-aggressive. JT never asked for anything, all he ever did was freely give us advice and critique. He didn't ask for anything in return but respect. I have had my fair share of other members on this forum falsely accuse and disrespect me, and its not nice.

JT was a great asset to this forum, regardless of what any of you think.

I can agree on the fact JT was more than happy in giving advices, so to improve shoting skills and such. But the way he usually wrote was a little too harsh.
Can't explain myself very well, what I mean is that he was like showing he knows more than us, and wasn't hiding it. Like a too big ego, or self consciousness of being such a good photographer.
I mean, there are other members in this forum who know a lot of certain subjects, being cars, electronics, or others, but they never write in the aggressive way he did.
I never directly complained about that, I could stand that, but I can see why certain members could not like him.
if you ever asked for some explanation, even trough PM, to Pieter (Henk4) you know what I mean.
I sent some PMs to JT to ask him some tips on noise reduction, and he has been helpful, no doubt about that. But the way he wrote, seemed to be made to let me know I don't know a heck about photography. Which is true, but it isn't my priority either.

I would have preferred him to stay, his photos were excellent and his experience absolutely valuable, regardless of his own attitude.
but to be honest, I saw this coming, sooner or later.
