It was a mate in Perth who had a blue STi that I heard it from, he reckoned it was de rigueur.

Clutch, both. Not in the for sale section though... out/about.

The BMW was a model that was crash tested and sold in Australia, so importation was easy - you just make it match Australian specifications RE Indicators and seatbelts.

A Subaru might be a bit trickier but I'd suggest that the largest expense you'll have won't be anything to do with the car, just the shipping fees. An importer (there are bucketloads in QLD) might be able to help, but they'll deal direct with Japan mostly I'd suggest, but they'd handle compliance stuff pretty easily.

Also, there are higher import charges if the car is purchased and shipped immediately. We saved a packet by using the car for a year in NZ before shipping it over.

    EDIT: The Moar You Know.

    Rough outline:
VIA (Vehicle Import Approval) 3 Weeks before you buy the car. Need this before importing so that Customs will even look at your vehicle.
Pay Import taxes (GST and LCT where applicable)
    Import Declaration form to Customs
Customs & Quarantine Assessment of Vehicle.
Once these are complete, you'll have an Authority to Deal (ATD) on the car, meaning you can take possession. After this you take it for Roadworthy inspections etc and fix problems. God knows how long that'll take.

Total process is about 5-6 weeks (!). I seem to remember this being easier...

yeah figured on the timeline being that much. there are a bunch of companies like J-spec that take care of everything with a $1100 surcharge- apparently way easier than trying to do it yourself; i.e. you pay the little bit extra but you don't spend any time chasing things up (how much is your time worth i guess?).
from people's feedback dealing through importers like them it's pretty much point out what you want and pick it up and drive off in 5-6 weeks.
i think that will be the way to go

I concur if you're importing direct from Japan that a company is the better way to go. With NZ at least you get to check condition of vehicle (hello $300 return airfares) but it's not a bad thing either way.

BTW - Bluey, Pubic transport in Wellington is the sickness. Cheap, efficient and on time. plus the routes are regular and interchangeable. Cars were great to have but only as toys really, my whole family got around on public transport.

Also, If you want to live in the city hit up the suburbs of Oriental Bay, Thordon, or Te Aro. I lived a bit south (Island bay, 15 minutes on the bus from the city) but those are the places that are right in the heart of things and you get excellent views. Prices are a bit steep I think though...

Just don't move to Lower or Upper Hutts. Jabba is not appreciative.
