Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato

Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato

The Alfa Giulia Junior (1300 cc) received a Zagato body in 1969, which changed its appearance considerably. Obviously not many people were willing to pay the higher price over the Bertone Coupe, the shape of which is a true masterpiece. The Junior 1.3 stayed in production until 1972, when it was replaced by the 1.6 variant, which had a 113 BHP engine, giving about 190 kph. The 1.3 production ended after 1108 cars, and the 1.6 is even rarer, as only 402 cars were delivered during a 3 year production span.

Here is a rare 1.6 at Schwetzingen in 2003

And here are some more GT 1300 Junior Zagato's

Hello forum members,

And here are some more GT 1300 Junior Zagato's during the 'Sint Bommelrit' of the Dutch Alfa Romeo Owners Club' (SCARB) in 2006.

At the moment (March 2008), our Register Junior Zagato Holland has registered more than 90 GT 1300/1600 Junior Zagato's in Holland on chassisnumber.

Hello Henk,

Thanks for the information! We now know that in fact 1117 cars of the GT 1300 Junior Zagato were built of which two were scrapped during production because they were not up to specification. The highest chassisnumber, #1801117, has been owned by a Dutchman for a long time. Indeed 402 cars were made of the 1600 version.

Up to now, #1800009 was the oldest GT 1300 Junior Zagato in existence, but four weeks ago we found out that #1800003, #1800005 and #1800008 are 'alive' and in Japan at this moment. A small article will be written on this topic in 'Het Klaverblaadje', the Dutch Alfa Romeo Club Magazine, that will be published at the end of March 2008.

Ciao, Olaf

Great pictures!!

Hello Jorg (sorry, I can't find the umlaut!),

Great pictures of these JZ's! Behind the periscopia I see a JZ with flared front and rear fenders. I saw something like that on a GT 1600 JZ that is supposed to be tuned by Conrero. See the attached pictures.
Do you know more of that red JZ and perhaps of the silver one in the pictures? And do you know if Conrero had something to do with the JZ?

Ciao, Olaf

Hi Olaf,
never heard of a Conrero Zagato. Virgilio Conrero was famous for the Giulietta Engines and the first TZ's, but later I heard, he was working with Opel Engines, cause Autodelta took over. Never heard even of a Conrero prepared GTA. There seems to be one 2600 SZ, which was prepared by him.
The newer 105 Cars, were mostly from Autodelta, or Facetti.
But the Names Bosato, Facetti, Conrero and Autodelta, are good, to push the price up. and the man died some years ago, so none could ask him.
Maybe some Conrero Cams, make a whole Car?
Regards
Jörg

Hello Jörg,

Thanks for the input. I feel likewise concerning Conrero and the Junior Zagato. Let's see if something different comes up that proves us wrong!

Ciao, Olaf
