But I think we can all agree that it is mostly down to the price of fuel, with a pretty insignificant minority being the price of cars.
Like most other places (excluding hybrids and other green specials), the least thirsty cars are probably at the very bottom of the automotive price bracket. But, those cars carry a stigma here, when you can get more metal for not much more money people do... You've heard all that before.
In fact, when gas prices tanked due to the financialpocalypse Americans immediately went back to buying the biggest car we could stretch our dollars into.
I often feel obliged to defend Americans and American cars from both warranted and unwarranted criticism due to the large amount of it, but that was just stupid on our part.

But the thing is, cars aren't (dramatically) more exepnsive here or there when you compare the same models.
However, regarding the whole market, one could argue that west of the atlantic money tends to be spent on metal and east of it money tends to be spent on intangibles.

I typically get 30 +/- 2mpg so normally just keep quiet in this thread however i recently got 36mpg on a long run which is nice. Basically stuck behind traffic on twisty country roads doing 45mph.
On a far more negative note I recently put my car in for some pre- wheel alignment work on the track rod ends. After some calcs I figured the usually good garage and only one I trusted (against my instruction) drove to another garage to do some alignment. Over 25 miles driving they got 13mpg!! they must have thrashed my car....

for the last 7500 kms, average 6.2 liter per 100. (which is below the official 6.3 ECE rating...). Includes two trips to Goodwood and Silverstone, plus the Paris motorshow, with not only me driving....
