Fuel consumption is apparently around 10mpg....yikes

Heres another NZ based one http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...er-1976-a.html

and a rather damning review of one http://mrec.rotary.net.nz/articles/roadpacer.htm

Reputedly these can be worth a pretty penny to astute collectors, historically the only rotary powered 'GM car' to reach production

Thanks for the link Spaz

Stop looking at me! Look at me! Stop looking at me!
If I had tons of money laying around, I'd totally love to get one of those for racing purposes. That and that rotary bus over there on the side. Get me some Communist Russia cars and have me a grand ole time. Maybe a midget on a greyhound too.

Collection for collection's sake?

I think Mazda should have gone nuts and made a bespoke engine for this.
Even greater fuel econ. woes, but possibly a bit more grunt.
Why did they ever do this? Buzzy small capacity engines don't really do well when put into dignified luxo-barges. I would think even your average marketing man could figure that out.

Happy Anzac day to the Aussie (and few other kiwi members) btw. lest we forget.

13B wasn't a good engine to be using for the weight of this car. Nowhere near enough torque. The target market for this car (insanely rich and government ministers) would be able to stand less than favourable fuel consumption but that AND poor performance? The only way to extract anywhere near decent performance was to rev it crazily, straining the 3 speed slushbox and also creating a bit of a noise problem which would go against the luxury pretensions of the car.

Mazda used a 13b again in a large luxury sedan, in the mark 3, 4 and 5 929's/Luce's. However these had less weight to cart around and in the mark 5's case a turbo.

I saw a Toadpacer in Japan, it was on display in a dealership. Looked mint and ...purple.

No such thing. As I recall, In exchange for sharing rotary tech, GM handed over a bunch of HQ bodies but because of Japan engine capacity tax they decided to ditch the straight sixes and mate a high revving rotary to a 3spd auto gearbox that hated to be spun. Joke was that the thing was price at about twice what a new Cosmo cost.
