Pontiac G8 GT

(from General Motors Press Release)

Quote:
Designed for enthusiasts who are passionate about performance, the all-new Pontiac G8 performance sedan – arriving at dealerships in early 2008 – is the first North American application of GM’s new global rear-wheel-drive architecture. The V8-powered G8 GT SEMA Edition was displayed at the ’07 SEMA Show with a host of tuner-inspired custom touches, including a hot orange paint scheme with matching leather seat inserts, door panels and instrument panel pad.

Under the hood is the production 6.0L V-8, rated at 361 horsepower (268 kW) and 385 lb.-ft. of torque (520 Nm). A six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control backs the powerful small-block engine and complements a four-wheel independent suspension outfitted with unique 20-inch wheels and performance tires.

The G8 GT SEMA Edition car is equipped with production equipment that includes:

Standard ABS and traction control augmented by high-performance HSV brakes

Electronic stability control

Seat-mounted thorax air bags and dual-stage frontal air bags for front passengers, with automatic passenger sensing system

Roof rail side-impact air bags for both seating rows

OnStar with available Turn-by-Turn navigation

Power-adjustable front seats

Fog lamps

Quad polished stainless steel exhaust tips

Rear lip spoiler

Augmenting the SEMA Edition is a series of modifications, including:

Custom orange exterior paint

Orange-accented interior components, including seat inserts, door panels and instrument panel pad

Enhanced brake package with drilled and slotted rotors

Lowered performance suspension package

Twenty-inch wheels with performance tires

The G8 has a progressive styling package highlighted by strong Pontiac design cues, such as a dual-port grille, fog lamps, bold wheels and a confident, wheels-at-the-corners stance. The car’s design accents Pontiac’s performance lineage, with fenders that flare over the wheels, seemingly hugging the wide tires and enhancing its athletic stance.

Distinctive elements include hood scoops and front fender vents, as well as projector-beam headlamps housed in crystal-clear lenses. At the rear, taillamps feature bright detail work surrounding the red lighting elements.
Engine = 6 liter V8
Aspiration = natural
Torque = 385 lb-ft
HP = 361 hp
HP/Liter = 60.2 hp per liter

Wow, the spec is almost as good as the Holden, and you almost can't tell it's the same car! Seriously though, I think I'd still go and spend about ten grand on an old Trans-am and some quick mods. I know it has a live axle, and this is probably a lot more refined and higher in quality, but that seems to miss the point a little.

P.S. The photo seems to show a standard H pattern manual of six speeds, any word on the availability?

doesn't really seem like much of a show car, the only custom bit is the paint i would like the little boot lip spoiler to be an option here, though.

for some reason there is a delay on the manual transmission, which seems wierd since holden shipped the manual from the word go.
apparently GM is trying to fiddle with it for fuel economy? or something?

audi has nothing on this, for this price although i think it's more of a BMW 5 series competitor.

Australian muscle cars rock. I have no idea why Americans can't come up with anything Americans like and need to depend on another country's cars to make the brand look good. It's really stupid I think.

Or use one of these as the base?

I think the Monaro is good enough as a muscle car. Besides, it looks better on your side of the Pacific anyway.

In addition, the Ford offerings are way better on your side. You guys still get better cars than us. And ironically, it's an American car company. Really is strange that American car manufacturers doesn't save the best for its own country, like most other car manufacturers do in Europe and Asia.

imo it's because the AU market has always been highly competitive, so they had to cater exactly to the market to survive, in the US i think because it's a much larger market it is only in the past few years/decade starting to get as competitive - they could bank off patriotism a bit more as well.

a fair few holden employees are american too, so maybe the they can do their thing a lot better when not directly under the bean counters
