    Dyson Sticking With Aer, Lola Combo For 2006 Alms

    Arming itself with the tools to meet new LMP1 rules for the upcoming American Le Mans Series, Dyson Racing has announced its 2006 chassis-engine combination, sticking with a proven formula for its two-car effort. The team will field a pair of new Lola B06/10s that will be powered by Advanced Engine Research's 3.6-liter, twin-turbo V8 engines for 2006.

    Created by an engine design team lead by ex-F1 engine designers Oliver Allan and Ian Prosser, the engine has been designed with the best of F1 and Indy Car technology applied to the endurance racing environment.

    "Dyson Racing is one of the most respected and accomplished teams, factory or privateer, to compete in the American Le Mans Series," said Scott Atherton, president and CEO. "The support of Rob Dyson and his entire operation has meant so much to us through the years, and confirmation of them taking their program to the next level with a new chassis and engine shows their commitment to the ALMS is stronger than ever. Dyson, Lola and AER have formed an impressive combination over the last few seasons, and there is no doubt in my mind that they will be a forced to be reckoned with in 2006 and beyond. This news simply adds to the intrigue of what our LMP battles are going to be like in 2006. We can't wait."

    "Advanced Engine Research has been an incredible technical partner for the past four years," said Dyson, team principal. "It shares Dyson Racing's cultural and philosophical outlook: always looking to improve and doing whatever it takes to win. The team at AER is an extremely committed, flexible and determined engine partner. Their contributions will ensure a competitive season for Dyson Racing in 2006."

    "We are very pleased to have been chosen as the engine partner for Dyson Racing on their exciting new LMP1 program," commented Mike Lancaster, Managing Director for AER. "They are one of best teams in sports cars and great to work with at the track."

    AER's new 3.6-liter, twin-turbo V8 is designed to focus on durability.
    The new V8 engine was designed from a clean sheet of paper specifically for the ACO's LMP1 regulations. It sets new standards for size and weight, while minimizing frictional losses. The 75-degree V8 first ran on the dyno in September. Designed with the focus on durability, the engine is more compact than any existing V8 in the series.

    "After all the months of hard work, seeing the engine run on the dyno and exceed expectations has been a great satisfaction," noted Allan, Technical Director of AER. "But what we are all waiting for is to see the car run on the track. For that car to be a Dyson car is fantastic, as they have been the team to consistently challenge Audi. The whole AER team is looking forward to a successful 2006."

    That sounds like a pretty good combo, and I've heard that the new AER is also direct injection...

    Wonder if they are finally going to Le Mans this year...

    Yes. You don't have to win major races like Petite, but you have to be a strong competitor, so if a team gets many, many podiums and a few wins there is a possibility that the team will receive a Le Mans invitation. Also note that the ACO puts some teams in every class on standby in case a team cannot make it to Le Mans, which was the reason why Spyker was invited

    Spyker was not a reserve entry this year, or any other year.
    If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

    On the ACO website before Le Mans they had the entry list up and there was both of the Spykers and one had "reserve" next to it

    The entry list for Le Mans is limited to 50 cars spread across the 4 categories. 24 entries are "pre-selected", that is to say if they enter, their entry will be accepted. This only applies if the entry is to the same category as it was pre-selected for. This priveledge belongs to the team and is not related car or engine make. The pre-selections in each category are:-

    * 1st and 2nd at 2005 Le Mans in each category
    * 1st and 2nd in 2005 LMES in each category
    * 1st at 2005 Petit Le mans in each category
    * 1st in 2005 ALMS or 2nd in ALMS in each category if winner also won Petit Le Mans

    The criteria for selection are deliberately vague, the following is a quote from the ACO regulations outlining the "rules":-

    a. The following criteria are at the Selection Committee’s discretion.
    b. The list is not exhaustive and with no priority classification.

    * A maximum of two (2) cars per competitor
    * Fame of the competitor (manufacturer, factory-backed team, well-known private team, private team)
    * Previous "24 Hours of Le Mans" races
    * Competitors' record
    * Regular entries in "American Le Mans Series" and "Le Mans Endurance Series" events
    * Recommended entry in a race prior to the Selection Committee meeting
    * Quality of the cars
    * Technical interest
    * Relationship with the A.C.O. and its environment regarding legal and financial issues
    * Maintaining the participation of "privateers"
    * Etc.

    Exactly one of them, not the main racing car. They could have entered a second car this year, but decided not to.
