im not saying non Americans couldn't...however, this is the first time the crew of a hijacked ship has fought back and retaken the ship since somali piracy has been making big news as of late. maybe it is a coincidence that they were Americans...but either way, they are the first ones who took the ship back and they were American

a 2nd mate from the ship was just on the phone with cnn... the pirates are on the ship's lifeboat with the ship's master. they tried to do an exchange for the, but the pirates didnt hold up their end of the bargain. the whole situation is still progressing though.
on a personal note, when i was stationed in norfolk, i used to see that ship coming in and out pretty regularly. i like the maersk ships, generally top notch crews.

Assuming that "great" in parenthesis is condescending... then yeah, you're right, hundreds of millions of people have chosen to come to our "great" country because its such a awful place.

If this would have happened to a French ship, the US media would not even have cared to report about it.....
Anyway, one crew member has been hijacked but the ship is free. If this will result in a significant ransom to be paid by Maersk, then hijacking crewmembers in stead of the whole might become a trend.

Raises too many concerns over abuse of powers and the risk of innocents injured and would only mean the pirates woudl start carrying BIGGER weapons. Couldn't afford to put Phalanx/Goalkeeper on EVERY cargo ship

That's good to hear. But it really doesn't have much to do with just them being Americans. It has a lot to do with Maersk training their sailors and crew how to handle those types of situations. Where as other companies or countries would not have the same kind of training exercises as Maersk or America has. It also takes guts to do something like that, but it also has a lot to do with training as well as the situation.
@Coolieman - A lot of ships do carry firearms, but only pistols, while the pirates carry automatic assault rifles.
