Precision Driving - Swedish Style

G'day guys.

Just found this fantastic video of the Old SAAB precision driving team - this one is taken from 1988. Set up in three parts and played to some beautiful classical music. apparently 9000's are pretty athletic cars

Have a look see:

I wonder how many times they screwed up the bit at 4 minutes or so..?

And what the heck did the 900 Cabrio actually do?

Burst a front tyre at speed and showed the car remained stable.

and they can be pretty quick too

1992 Bathurst 12 Hour [Production Cars]
1st Garry Waldon / Charlie O'Brien / Mark Gibbs Mazda RX7 Twin Turbo
2nd Tony Longhurst / Alan Jones / Neville Crichton BMW M5
3rd Colin Bond / Glenn Seton SAAB 9000 CS Turbo
The above 9000 CS was unlucky not to get 2nd outright, a great effort for such a low-profile and supposedly non-sporting sedan. Apart from a 1st-lap hiccup it ran like a train all day and was clearly faster around Bathurst than the uber-expensive BMW M5, especially in a straight line where it could even hold onto the tail of the very rapid RX7 TTs up Mountain Straight

They are an attractive car in a perverse way as well - certainly do a lot to dispell the rumours of cars with Big glass hatchbacks, turbo lag and front-drive large cars.

if i could get a decent Spec 9000 i'd grab it. for the right price of course

I don't mind the look of them either. Good examples are generally regarded as reliable and long-lived. If you're prepared to wait for one to come along they can be rather cheap to purchase too, as the 9000 is one of those forgotten models that few buyers consider. Over the years I've seen some very tidy low-km units for sale in Canberra, going for a comparitive song

i'd certainly be keen - i have seen some but my repair guy LOVES Saabs....and not for the right reasons

there is always a 900 out the front of his place but strangely never a 9000 - and he services 2 of the family's cars.

perhaps this is a sign? and no doubt components would be a little cheaper because they're common across 4 models?

Thema, 164, Croma and 9000?

I think doors, windscreen and perhaps suspension layout were shared. IIRC everything else was more or less unique to each car. Even the Fiat Group cars had some different engines.

Haha, no offense, but you could have put it in the Official Video Sticky where all the videos are.

Nice find though. Lots of practice and coordination.
