Chevrolet confirmed what had been rumored for several months: The 2013 Chevrolet model raced in the Sprint Cup Series next year will be called the SS.

The SS will be a V-8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan.

Chevrolet said the street version of the Chevrolet SS will be badged as a 2014 model and will go on sale in late 2013. It will be the first rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet sedan sold in the United States for 17 years.

I find this last bit amazing. Still the yanks will have a decent rwd sedan and if they can restrain themselves form putting scoops and fins and bling all over it a nice looking one at that.

Question for NASCAR aficionados. Surely the Chevs that run in that race are rwd. Are the chassis all just a formula type design?

Nascar has been silhouette cars for years now. The chassis is near spec but the motors aren't (thought they do have very tight rules). I think the last vestiges of stock body parts were removed in the 1980s.

Even the term "Silhouette" is loosely termed...as they don't have to follow any stock dimension like you would expect a true silhouette car would....The current COT car is just the difference is the headlight/grille decal....The 2014 car will have at least the front end made to resemble the road going cars, the current Nationwide car is already following this...

True. I don't remember the last year Nascar actually mandated production parts were used on the cars. I think it was in the 80s. Once the Thunderbird and Monte Carlo and all they had were FWD cars I think that was the end. Well that and it was too hard to balance performance when aero was becoming so critical. They may look like bricks but there is no mistaking it, Aero is critical when going near 200 mph.

Racing really isn't that bad in NASCAR IMO, a tad long, but competitive...the all-star race was entertaining....I love watching those cars on road courses....

The culture is a bigger turn off for me....but comes with the territory...
