Either that or make a Peugeot 107 GTI. That'd be light.

Come on it's not the best lookng car in the world, but it's not that bad either. If I were in the market for such a car it (or the C1) would be a strong candidate.

I personally prefer the Aygo, tbh.
and I meant big, regarding the Polo, typo.
    but I agree with you.

The problem is: The one you'd actually want (the one in the pictures?) would probably cost you around £15,000 in the UK. For that I could buy a nice E46 330Ci...and have enough change to insure it (maybe!)!

New cars are getting ridiculously expensive these days - a Mondeo Zetec (average model) 2.0 diesel is now around £20k (list price) new! There are squillions of better buys for £20k - I'm sure you'd all rather own, for example, a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS 320CDI than the above!

Yep but most people prefer an expensive new car than an unkwown second hand car. There's also the psicological feling of using something for the first time.

And last, someone has to buy the bargains of tomorrow.

    [INSERT (IN)APPROPRIATE SEXIST JOKE HERE!]

Joking aside, with a new car, just because it's "fresh" out of the showroom doesn't mean that it's going to be problem-free / in better condition than a used car. I've seen new cars that have been delivered to customers with glaring faults before!

Of course, but it's an irrational feeling. I can understand it.

But then again I've never considered cars investments or economic objects.

Overall, it looks like a bestseller. The one thing I'm worried about is the gearboxes. They're force feeding the DSG's into the market and I don't like it.

I'd hate to see European cars get Americanized like that, slowly making proper manuals an oddity instead of the norm.

So very true, as I stated in another thread, there are very, very few new cars that I actually consider even a "decent" buy of even vaguely good "value". Especially in car-consuming countries like the UK for instance.

yeah, i suppose the upshot is being able to take it right back to the dealer so they can fix it on warranty. but then most brands have extended warranties these days and imo the best time to get a 'new' car is after someone else has had it for 12-20 months or so - they take the biggest depreciation hit and you've still got warranty..

then you can do like i did, and extend the warranty further, so i have warranty coverage until almost 100k miles.

exactly, the only unknown is how the other guy ran the engine in, and that's usually not an issue.

Light, fast hot hatch? Ask my father. He has a Golf MkIII 3-door with a 2.0 TDI engine (which was only available for a very short time). That thing eats GTIs from the same generation for breakfast. The funniest thing is that everybody underestimates his car because it's a Diesel

The new Polo is neat looking in my opinion. But to be honest, they could make it more different to the Golf. But as i think, the only interesting versions for enthusiasts should be the GTI. Carries the spirit of the original Golf GTI.
