    R.I.P. Phil Hill (1927-2008)

Phil passed away today, very sad.

Phil Hill - American Racing Champion

    borrowed from another site:

After receiving a report earlier today, we've just confirmed the sad news that Phil Hill, the first American to win a Formula One World Drivers Championship, passed away at 10:30 this morning at the age of 81 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Hill will be remembered as one of the greatest race car drivers in American history, having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Italian Grand Prix, among others. He will also be remembered as a great writer, known to many for his years of work writing about cars and automotive history for Road & Track. Phil Hill is survived by his wife Alma, one son and two daughters. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family and colleagues. More information as it becomes available.

That's sad news. The only person to win Le Mans, the F1 World Championship and Pebble Beach.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

not unexpected, but when it happens it comes as a real shock. Phil Hill was the Pebble Beach judge with the longest experience of all of them. Last year he took on his duties being pushed around in a wheelchair, this year he had to forfeit.

    RIP

I remember some interviews he gave in I beleive Road and Track, despite all he had accomplished he was a down to earth and nice man. Hopefully the sport of racing commemorates him in a way proportional to his deeds

RIP Phil. One of my personal heroes because of the things he did with R&T and the interviews he gave. The only American born F1 World Champ. Truly a great man who will be missed.

Very sad. Like Paul Frere, he was the kind of person who could go on on these wonderful tales about the olden days, the thrills, the spills, the champagne, and the low life expectancy of the average race car driver.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.
