TVR S-series

Very brief history.

The TVR S range was announced at the 1986 Motor Show at Earls Court in London, as a retro-styled low priced model to act as an introduction to TVR ownership. Due to a massive positive response the car went into production in less than 12 months, with 250 pre-manufacture orders. This was Peter Wheeler's first major development since buying the company from Martin Lilley, and the turning point in TVR's fortunes.

Main powerplant for S-series cars was Ford's Cologne V6 in 2.8 L (160 hp) and 2.9 L (170 hp) forms.

There was also a monster V8S, with 4 litre (and in some cases 4.3) fuel-injected Rover V8 engine. 0-60 comes up in 4.7 secs (according to some magazines anyway ) and disk brakes are standard all round. These cars can be identified by the large bulge in the bonnet, actually designed to make space for a supercharger for V6 models exported to Italy, but subsequently used on the V8S (the normal bonnet would fit).

2604 S-series cars were made between 1986 and 1994, 410 of these were of the V8S variety.

I've been in a V8S and it was an amazing experience. So damn aggressive and noisy. Smelt moldy however because it leaked through the roof

I can see where newer TVRs get their character from but for me, I just love the models from the Griffith onwards. The older stuff doesn't quite do it for me somehow. I'm sure their great cars, but they're just not my type.
