2006-02-26: Geneva Motorshow Preview
Geneva Motorshow Preview Before we take off to Geneva, it's time to take a look at some of the highlights to be unveiled on the showfloor this Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the stars will be the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, which with 640 bhp will offer true supercar performance. Former Lamborghini employee Horacio Pagani is set to unveil an even more powerful car; the Zonda Roadster F. Both Italian manufacturers will be eclipsed by the Swedish Koenigsegg CCX, built specifically for the North American market. At 415 bhp the new Porsche 997 GT3's engine produces an impressive 115 bhp per litre. Using a Porsche as a basis, Rinspeed's zaZen will surely grab a lot of attention. Lotus will use the Geneva Motorshow to showcase their versatile bonded aluminum chassis with the highly unusual APX Concept.
We will be on the showfloor Tuesday and Wednesday to capture all the releases. A full report with all our findings will be published here on Wednesday afternoon.
2006-02-22: Oldest and newest Ferrari, sixty years apart ...
Ferrari 166 SC Ferrari officially did not start making cars until 1947, but many of the parts to build those first cars were ordered and built a year earlier. Today we take a close look at the fourth Ferrari ever constructed and the oldest complete Ferrari still in existence; the 166 Spyder Corsa, serial number 004C. Despite its extensive racing history, it still sports its original body and an engine with 1946 date stamps. It has been in the current owner's family for over forty years and rather than restoring it, they have carefully preserved this rolling piece of history. In a recent public appearance at the Cavallino Classic it took centre stage, flanked by the company's latest offering, the FXX. Almost sixty years apart, these two thoroughbreds captured Ferrari's history and racing heritage so well that we decided to feature them together. Earlier last month we shot the FXX at its first North American appearance in Detroit and two weeks later on track at Moroso. We picked the best 12 shots of the 166 Spyder Corsa and 24 shots of the FXX in two mouthwatering galleries.
2006-02-20: Eight new cars: Superbird, Geneva novelties, two 1946 thoroughbreds ...
Plymouth Road Runner Superbird In a very successful attempt to reduce drag, the Chrysler corporation introduced a very odd looking nose and rear aerofoil for their Road Runner and Charger NASCAR racers of 1969. In the hands of the likes of Richard Petty these cars achieved incredible speeds and dominated the championship. These new competition parts had to be homologated, so a limited run of these striking cars were built for the road. Today we take a look at one of these Plymouth Road Runner Superbird homologation specials, which passed through the hands of Richard Petty in the 1970s.
This week's batch of new cars proves that Geneva will not stage releases of exotic manufacturers alone. Peugeot is set to introduce the new 207 and has livened things up a bit with the 280 bhp 207 RCup Concept. Mazda will enter the hot-hatch segment this summer with the 3 MPS. Together with retro, cross over is a popular theme these days and Volkswagen has joined in with the Concept A; a cross between a SUV and a sportscar.
While most of Europe was working on post-war reconstruction, some manufacturers had already commenced production in 1946. Maserati even managed to build an all-new model; the exceptionally beautiful A6 1500 GT Pinin Farina Berlinetta. Delage produced five more examples of the D6-3L, which had made their debut right before the War. These were the last Delage racing cars, whereas the Maserati A6 was one of many great cars to come.
  2006-02-15: Retromobile Paris Report
Retromobile Report and Slideshow Many automobile enthusiasts engage in an annual pilgrimage to Paris in February to attend the Retromobile show. Hosted by Port de Versailles exhibition centre, Retromobile offers visitors not only a spectacle of historic road and racing cars, but also the opportunity to find that one missing piece of literature they desire. Packed in a relatively small hall are manufacturer representatives, clubs, classic car brokers and several auctioneers. The limited space available encourages every exhibitor to bring out something rare and this is what makes Retromobile special.
For a few years now Christie's has been the official auctioneer of the event with an auction on the first Saturday of the show. This year's sale was highlighted by a number of XK 120 Jaguars, of which the top seller was an early C-Type at nearly 1.4 million. A lot of space on the floor was reserved for France's three big manufacturers for large theme-based displays. Among the many exceptional vehicles on display another Jaguar XK 120 stood out; one of three bodied by Ghia with their Supersonic style coupe body.
For the fourth year running our photographic team attended the annual highlight of the indoor season. Find out why we left with mixed feelings, but surely will return next year in our full report and 100-shot slideshow.
2006-02-13: New 911 Turbo, Exige S, extreme supercars, Le Mans Bugatti EB 110 and more ...
Porsche 997 Turbo Things are heating up for the Geneva Motorshow, which opens its doors for the media in two weeks time. It does not get much hotter than the all new Porsche 997 Turbo; with 480 bhp, all wheel drive and optional ceramic discs it should be a match for the Italian competition. Lotus announced another addition to the model line-up in the shape of the Exige S packed with a 218 bhp supercharged engine. A star on Renault's Geneva stand will be the lavish Altica Concept.
Elsewhere around the world two new manufacturers took the wraps of two similarly extreme supercars. At the Melbourne Motorshow the Carbontech Redback Spyder was unveiled while in England former McLaren employees gave a sneak preview of the Freestream T1, which promises to be a genuine road racer with a power to weight ratio of over 1000 bhp/tonne.
This past Friday we visited the Retromobile Show in Paris, where an exclusive selection of fine historic cars awaited us. A full report will follow later this week, but as a preview we have included one of the cars present in today's update. Raced only once, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1994, the Bugatti EB 110 SS Le Mans marqued a very brief return of the fabled marque to racing. In a very rare public appearance outside the Loheac museum, it was the star of the Bugatti club stand.
  2006-02-08: Palm Beach International, a Concours d'Elegance
Palm Beach International
In only it's second year The Palm Beach International, a Concours d'Elegance has made itself the perfect finale to the busy Cavallino Classic week. Held across town from the Breakers, surrounded by exclusive gated communities and everglades, the inaugural edition was such a success that it returned bigger, and as we quickly realized, better. A perfect indication of the interest created was the addition of a Gooding & Company auction to the program. The sale consisted of 55 lots highlighted by one of the very rare Figoni & Falaschi designed Talbot Lago Teardrop Coupes. An interesting and friendly bidding war pushed the price up to just over $3.5 million. On the show field another Figoni & Falaschi Talbot Lago was just one of many highlights in a highly varied show. Young and old were treated to contrasting road and racing cars like the exceptionally original 1912 Hotchkiss or a brand new Ferrari FXX. Another interesting aspect of this concours d'elegance is the judging, which is left to the entrants instead of 'expert' judges. At the end of the day all three 'best of show' prizes were unanimously awarded to a very well deserved winner.
Ultimatecarpage.com's photographic crew completed the second leg of their North American trip at the Palm Beach Polo Club to capture the 'International' and the Gooding auction. Their findings are summarized in a full report and a 200 shot slideshow. Enjoy!
2006-02-06: Geneva previews, Porsche and Maserati racers, Ferrari Superamerica and more ...
Alfa Romeo Spider After the storm of new vehicle launches last month in Detroit the dust has had little time to settle before the manufacturers started 'leaking' information and pictures of the upcoming releases planned for Geneva later this month. Looking at what has been announced so far, we can't wait to get on the showfloor to capture it all. For now we'll make do with the press releases to build up the anticipation. A year after the launch of the Brera, Alfa Romeo will take the wraps off its drop-top sister; the equally beautiful Spider. Traditionally the gold lining of the Swiss show is provided by the many high-end manufacturers present and this must have surely inspired the introduction of the BMW Z4 M Coupe, Mercedes Benz SL 65 AMG and the Volvo S80. Lotus is set to showcase their engineering abilities with the very interesting APX Concept, which utilizes the company's versatile vehicle architecture.
Both Maserati and Porsche were leading racing car manufacturers when they introduced the 8CM and 906 respectively. Although very different in purpose and design both racers are excellent examples of both companies' rich motorsport heritage. One of the stars at the recent edition of Bonham's annual Ferrari Sale was the featured 400 Superamerica, which sold for a very cool $560,000.
