The 680 S was the first in the row of 'white elephants', as the heavy S, SS, SSK and SSKL type cars were dubbed, which dominated the racing scene at the end of the twenties and beginning of the thirties. The large supercharged engine alone weight a hefty 440 kg. The 680 S was campaigned by legendary drivers like Rudolf Caracciola. Caracciola used this example to win the first ever race run on the new Nurburgring track in 1927. It is seen here at the 2002 Goodwood Festival of Speed to celebrate the 'Ring's' 75th birthday.
