Page 1 of 1 When the revised models went on sale in June 1993 the new model designation was also introduced for the 124 series. The medium-sized range was now named the E-Class, like the S-Class and the C-Class and system of model designation was modified. First came a letter, denoting the class of car, followed by a three-digit number denoting the engine's cubic capacity. The suffixes 'E', 'T', 'C' disappeared. The cabriolets were thus now the E 220 Cabriolet and the E 320 Cabriolet.
From September 1993 the E 36 AMG Cabriolet was on the market, a sporty version with the 195 hp 3.6-liter 4-valve engine from AMG. There were some minor changes to the bodywork of this version and it also had 17-inch light-alloy wheels in the AMG design.
Although its Coupe counterpart was phased out in 1996, the Cabriolet stayed in production until July 1997, due to strong demand. Page 1 of 1
