Equipped with absolutely, its only optionial luxury item was a proper windscreen. Weight saving was the main reason behind the's Sport Spider's bare design. Although only powered by a 2 litre engine, its low weight provided supercar-like performance.

Designed in cooperation with Fior Concept, the spaceframe chassis was constructed completely from aluminium. It offered the rigidity needed for perfect handling characteristics, at an unprecedented low weight. Double wishbone suspension was fitted all round. Power assistance was not used for either the steering or the ventilated brakes.

Mounted transversely behind the driver was the same 2 litre engine used in the Clio Williams, the hottest hatch of its day. It produced a hefty 150 bhp, which was transferred onto the road through a 5-speed gearbox. The car was clothed with a composite body. Without the front window fitted, an aerofoil directed the air over the driver's head.

After the Sport Spider's introduction at the 1995 Geneva Motorshow, few expected the extreme car to ever roll off the production line. Within a year production commenced in the old Alpine production facility in Dieppe. Unfortunately the Sport Spider appealed to a similar audience as the Lotus Elise, which offered even better performance and more weather protection.
