Click here to download printer friendly versionAfter disappointing results at the 1970 Monte Carlo rally in January, Ford ordered the construction of a completely new rally car to compete with the Renault Alpines and Porsches.

According to designer Stuart Turner mid engine was the way to go and after swift lobbying he got the go-ahead. He worked on the car in secret for the rest of the year and completed it right before the end of the year to give the 70 part in the GT70 name a purpose. Various engines were proposed for the car, either the British four cylinder BDA engine or a German V6 engine.

The project ground to a halt due to weeks worker's strikes from which the profits suffered so badly that projects like the GT70 had to be scrapped. A couple of prototypes were built and it was rallied only once or twice for test purposes. This one is equipped with a Capri derived Essex V6 engine.
