Presumably delivered new to the United States, this Castagna bodied Isotta Fraschini 8A was eventually acquired by famous actor and opera tenor Sergio Franchi in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the time the car was complete but in need of some work. Soon after it was subjected to a restoration, during which the aluminium 'Boattail Cabriolet' was carefully preserved. The work was completed in time for the 1983 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where it was shown by Franchi. He held on to the car until the mid 2000s when it was acquired by the current owner at auction.
Although mechanically still in excellent condition, the Isotta Fraschini's restoration was showing its age. So soon after changing hands, the car was delivered to Libbey Restorations, who performed a ground-up restoration. Like Franchi, the new owner decided to show the car at the Pebble Beach d'Elegance upon the completion of the rebuilt. The work was awarded with a second in class in 2009 and soon after it was awarded Best of Show at the Newport Concours d'Elegance. The 'Grey Goddess' returned to Monterey for RM Auctions' annual auction during the 2012 Pebble Beach weekend. It sadly failed to sell after a high bid of close to $1.5 million.
