Chassis:
When American privateer Pete Lovely approached Lotus to acquire a Type 49 for himself to race, Colin Chapman agreed to sell him a brand new chassis. Assigned chassis number R11, it was first raced by Lovely in the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch early in 1969. He continued to campaign the car with limited success until May of 1971. Lovely sold the car soon after but once he had turned to vintage racing re-acquired the car and restored with the works Gold Leaf livery. Around this time author Michael Oliver discovered that Chapman had not sold Lovely a brand new car but a rebuilt Type 49 chassis R2 instead. This made it a an ex-Jim Clark Grand Prix winning works car, substantially increasing its value. The subsequent owner continued to campaign the car in Type 49B guise but in more recent years, it has been rebuilt as chassis R2.
