Never raced in period, this 956 was retained by the Porsche factory. It is understood to have been used to test and develop the new TAG-badged, Porsche designed V6 Formula 1 engine, which would be raced successfully by the McLaren team from late 1983. It is also believed to have been shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Still in Porsche ownership, it was displayed for many years in the Musee National de l'Automobile (Schlumpf Museum), sporting the 1982 Rothmans livery originally applied to chassis 003. It has since been repatriated by Porsche and in 2014 was shown at the Geneva Motor Show.
