Chassis:
The sixth and final McLaren MP4/4 built, this chassis was used by Alain Prost for the final races of the 1988 season. 'Le Professeur' used it to win three of the last four races, in Portugal, Spain and Australia. Although he scored more points in total than his team-mate Ayrton Senna, only the 11 best results counted, dropping Prost to second in the standings, three points behind Senna.
Retained by McLaren, this MP4/4 was recently completely restored by the company's 'heritage' team led by former chief mechanic Neil Trundle. He even managed to source a correct blow-off valve from the FIA to return to the engine to its period correct configuration. The car was brought out for the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it was scheduled to be driven by both Bruno Senna and Lewis Hamilton. Unfortunately mechanical problems prevented Hamilton from having a go.
