Chassis:
The first of four V8RI Maseratis built, chassis 4501 was originally raced by Philippe 'Phi-Phi' Etancelin. He crashed the car at Monza during its Italian Grand Prix debut. Returned to the factory, it was repaired and fitted with a conventional gearbox and trailing-arm rear suspension. In 1937, it was shipped to the United States for the Vanderbilt Cup, where it was raced by future owner Deacon Litz. During the following years, it was entered in six editions of the Indy 500 but failed to qualify at every attempt. In 1950, chassis 4501 was acquired by Phil Cade, who raced the car for many more years. From 1953, it was fitted with a HEMI V8. Over two decades after the car first turned a wheel it was still competitive as Cade won the 1958 Seneca Grand Prix. Cade would go on to own the car for over half a century before finally parting with in 2003. The current owner has spent eight years restoring the very rare Maserati to its 1936 specification. The project was just ready in time for the Maserati centenary celebrations in 2014.
