Chassis:
The seventh GT350 R built, this car was sold new to New Owen of Malvern, Pennsylvania. Representing the colours of sponsor Essex Wire, a single black stripe with orange borders was added to the competition Shelby Mustang. The car was first raced by Owen and his good friend Skip Scott in August of 1965 at Watkins Glen. It was then campaigned for two more seasons in regional SCCA events by Owen, who regularly finished on the podium. It was then sold to Canada where it was raced until a hefty shunt ended its racing career in 1969. Chassis 5R098 then sat un-repaired in a shed until 1981 when it was acquired by Rick Kopec for just $5,000. He spent the next five years collecting all the authentic parts required to rebuild the car. This work was entrusted to restorer Chris Liebenberg. From 1989 onwards, it has been raced extensively in historic events all over North America.
