Chassis:
The first of three Matra MS650s, chassis 01 was completed in time for the 1969 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the MS640 destroyed in testing, it was the only brand new Matra at Le Mans. Piloted by Piers Courage and Jean-Pierre Beltoise, it finished a credible fourth overall and second and class. Another fourth was scored in the next World Championship round at Watkins Glen. At the same track chassis 01 was raced in the Can-Am race where it finished an impressive 8th against much larger engined competition. Upon its return to Europe the first MS650 won the Paris 1000 km race at Montlhery in the hands of Beltoise and Henri Pescarolo. In 1970 it was raced at Daytona, Sebring and Brands Hatch before being retired.
Carefully maintained, it was regularly raced in historic events as diverse as the Tour Auto retrospective and Le Mans Classic. In 2009, it was sold at auction and joined a formidable stable of Matra sports cars and single seaters. By that time, it was in a rather tired condition and it was decided to have carefully restored by specialists Hall & Hall. The car was restored to its particularly striking twin-wing configuration as used at Brands Hatch in 1970s. Following several outings at exhibitions and other events, we understand, it has now been sold on.
