Chassis M16E/1 was the first of just two examples built for the 1975 season due to Penske's temporary withdrawal from USAC racing. Liveried in sparkling Gatorade colours, it was driven at Indy that year by Johnny Rutherford. The defending champion only managed the seventh fastest time in qualifying but worked his way up the field to finish second behind Bobby Unser in an Eagle. Earlier in the year Rutherford did win the Phoenix round of the USAC series in this car. After Rutherford switched to the second chassis for 1976, M16E/1 was sold to a privateer. It was eventually bought back by McLaren and can today be seen on the 'boulevard' of the McLaren Technology Centre.
