Chassis:
Featured is the first B-Type, built early in 1935. It was sold new to the mother of a very young Richard Seaman. Impressed by the young man's talented, Raymond Mays offered factory support and preparation, but that did not work out very well. Seaman then entrusted his ERA to master mechanic Giulio Ramponi and embarked on a Voiturette winning spree in the late summer of 1935. For 1936, Seaman replaced the ERA with a nearly ten year old Delage S8 15 and gave the brand new ERAs a run for their money. At the end of that season, he was picked up by Mercedes-Benz as the only British driver to race the 'silver arrows' in the 1930s.
After a season with Seaman, R1B passed through the hands of various amature racers, who of course could not match the results of its first owner. The car has survived in a very original condition and has been raced successfully in historic events for many years. Painted in the black worn in 1935, R1B is seen here in action during the 2007 Goodwood Revival.
