 A Classic Forever....
Kiwieb
01-31-2012
I've been a FERRARI fan since the first ones rolled out in the late 1940's - yes, I am that old - and looking at the 575 now on the last day of January 2012, this model hits all the right buttons for a traditional Grand Touring car.

Its balanced purity of line gives it a pleasing solidity and presence with just enough detailing like the body creases, the side fender "gills" and the bonnet air intake to retain visual interest and fill what would otherwise be boring blank body panels. The handling is assured and stable being well assisted by a 50/50 weight balance with the driver included. The front engine allows it to have a boot large enough to easily take enough luggage for a long weekend stay and to give more interior room for increased comfort of its occupants. The V12 engine has oodles of torque for more relaxed driving and the exhaust system too has been designed to lessen noise levels in order to meet the same objective.

The car looks just right and that's darn good for a design that came out ten years ago in 2002 - it has matured and aged well. Not bad for FERRARI's return to the classic and proven front engine and rear drive configuration amongst FERRARI's wonderful mid-engined twitchy screamers that demand far more effort and skill from their drivers.

I think it may just be the almost perfect Gran Turismo car and I would love to own and drive a well cared for example. In Australia prices are circa $AUD185k for models with under
35,000 Kms.

This model is worthy of the "Classic" title.

"Sorry Hoger, but you are way off the mark with your comments. Firstly the 575 was only an upgrade to the 550 not a replacement and therefore not much change in the looks. The 575M handling and performance has been ""reasonably"" improved over the 550. I believe the replacement to the 550/575 should be around 2005. I'm sure Ferrari will come out with something special just like they did with the 456M replacement. (612 Scagletti). Secondly, your comments about comparing the 575 with the Lambo is ridiculous. FIrstly, they are not even the same class of car. If you want to compare the Lambo with a Ferrari, then it should be the Enzo not the 575M. According to your name, you must love Porsche. I like Porsche too but are you going to extend your comments to the Porsche 911. Now there is a car manufacturer that hardly ever changes the look of their cars. All Porsche do is improve the same car over and over and over."
 Different class to Murc

The 575M is not trying to beat the Murcielago. The Murc is more of a supercar which forgoes all creature comforts,to reduce mass and hence increase acceleration. The 575M, however is a grand tourer, with more comfort and less speed, this is why ferrari didn't make it faster than the Murc.

The Maranello has existed since 1997, and with this new model, the looks and performance havent changed much from the 550. I was expecting a newer more exciting look, not to say that this doesnt look exciting, but I thought they would come out with something new. I dont like how they only improved this car a bit, when it comes to performance. It can't even beat a Murcielago yet, and the sad thing is that the Murc came before this new Ferrari, so why didn't Ferrari use the Murc as an example to beat, or at least work up to the same level of performance? I think this car is a waste of money, and if I was given a choice, I'd rather stop by the used dealership and pick up an old 550 with similar performance AND looks.
 one great car!!!!

9-11-2003
Is this one of the greatest cars or what? I never got the chance to drive one but i can relate to it's performance. Back in 98 I was working for Ferrari of North America they are based here in New Jersey. During that time I got to drive the 355,456,550,F50 and even got to sample the 360 both on the track and street. Well the 550 is truly a magnificent automobile. The stable at high speed, handling is great but not on par with the 360. Creature comforts are at the highest levels. I really enjoy driving this car, I would rank the 550 right behind the 360 in driving enjoyment. I just wish I had the chance to drive a 575.
 Surprisingly appealing...

I must admit when I first saw this car (original 550 Maranello) back in 1997 I honestly thought it was the least appealing of the Ferraris. That was until I laid eyes on it in person. I would have to say roughly two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars well spent. One down side to the design is there is the gas cap, in the place where an air duct should be. But in turn I think it gives it a little character.

"This car is definetely deserving of Ferrari's flagship status. However, I cannot understand how people can even think of comparing this car with an SL55????. This car has very few competitors, namely the Murcielago, Carrera GT, Pagani Zonda etc. This car is also clearly more refined tahn the earlier 550. However Ferrari should consider utilising some of ""underbody aerodynamics""-rear diffusers etc.- of the Enzo, and the 360, in the 575's successors - atlthough the 360 is ""smaller"" than the 575M, it can outhandle the 575 on the track any day. Perhaps the ultimate ferrari now, is The 360 Challenge Stradale."

I've driven this thing and it's VERY nice. It gives a smooth, yet powerful enjoyable ride. This car never fails to give me a great ride. Not many cars have such velvety V-12 engines, but I wish the engine could be a bit louder. It'd be nice just to hear a bit more. The seats are, well to me anyways, the best part of the car. It seems the whole interior is top-quality leather.

"hey guys..i really cant believe wat im reading here..i mean..u have to give each car credit...i mean this ferrari is a great car but dont go on comparing it to the SL55 amg or the cl600..I'm a great mercedes fan, but this ferrari would literally ""eat"" both the cl600/55 and the sl55(although the acceleration is quite even)..however the ferrari would blast off starting from 160-200 km/h. As for the Lambo..all i can say is that its an exhausting car to drive..unlike the ferrari(trust me...i've driven the ferrari..cant be smoother).i can tell u that i would choose the 575m over the 550..ANYTIME."

The Ferrari 575M Maranello is a work of art, a moving canvas and for a lot of people looking at a Ferrari is the closest they will come. But for those who are lucky enough to enjoy a car of this cost to drive questions have to be asked and opinions given. I rate this car a clear ten because structually it can not be faulted. But I will share two of my thoughts. One being that despite the increased speed due to the F1 shit, does that keep the car as a true roadster? And second of all, despite the name and performance, would you feel second best when parked next to a Lamborghini? I doubt anyone wants to spend this much money on a car just to be outdone.
 575's handleing

"i believe it was my good moron of a friend energy 2 that stated the 575 is only fast in straight lines. you have to be kidding yourself!! i dont know of why you dream of these little supra infested fantasies of yours; but the 575 does not lack handleing at all!!! true, the first suspension set up was not ideal for handleing, but that was fixed with the upgraded fiorano package. also, even though this is a front engine car, the weight distribution is 50:50. this car does not handle quite as well as the lambo or other ferraris...but once again, this car is a tourer, not a supercar. to call it's handleing poor would be like calling the 575 slow. i guess energy2 was thinking about his supra again. dont make assumptions about something that you know nothing about!"

I hope a new model will replace this ageing product soon. The styling is a little tired, there should be more performance, it should be more drivable during wet conditions. It still has the Ferrari sound, and an aged Ferrari soul. But Ferrari engineers has spoilt the suspension. You want a super car that has its nose kissing the asphalt often when driven at high speeds? NO! It may be a great grand-tourer, but to be even more competitive, a replacement is needed, urgently.

This Ferrari and its predecessors are all a classic in Italy's lil' old production line. Named after a town, the town where a lot of Ferrari engines and stuff are made, it is probably one of the most muscular looking cars in the world. While too gruff to be very handsome, this car is still one of the best known Ferraris to date. I love it.
 u can compare

I disagree with you capone. the 575m is still driven annually by owners the same as murielagos are. reading the classified magazines, i have seen secondhand murcielagos for sale with more than 20,000km on them already! the 575, is the same deal. people buy them to blast around, not as gt'2, therefore the 575 with same price, performance and slightly better practicality is a direct competitor to the murcielago. why is it that people with their 550's are trading in for murcielagos? if you dont believe me, check out the sales figures for the muricelago ! they have sold 10 times as many diablos 2 years ago! the lambo may look different , but the 575 isnt bought by people who drive a lot. the average buyer already has a mercedes s-class!
 Some comments are a joke

"I can't believe some of the comments I read in these forums. Most of them come from people that have no idea about cars. You must understand some cars are designed for different purposes. Take the 575M. You CAN NOT compare it to the Lambo. They are built for different purposes.Just look how different they look. The 575M is a GT car while the Lambo is a ""super car"". The 575M is a car that you can drive a 1000KMs in relative comfort. You certainly wouldn't want to drive a Lambo 1000KM. You will be exhausted. The 456M is also another GT car with 2+2. Yes, you can drive 1000KM in relative comfort with say 2 small adults or children in the back. By the way, rumour is that by 2004 or 2005, Ferrari will have the replacement for the 456M. Can't wait."
 575 compared to murielago

22-1-2003
I got passed by a yellow murielago last week, followed by a black 575 (i am thinking they could of been journalists, or rich playboys having fun), and i can guarantee this..the lambo blew me away, that noise..it doesnt look like cheese in real life you know! and the only reason i noticed the 575 was because the driver braked heavily in front of me, and i noticed the prancing horse at the back. with mercedes sl55amg/cl55amg (i dont understand u peoples points about the cl600) the cl600 delivers its power smoothly..if u are into fast mercs, buy a cl55, it has same power, more acceleration)anyway, ferrari should be trying to get a new 575 out in production. people buy ferraris not to drive everyday to work but to enjoy blasts on the weekends. this 575 is too staid, too conservative, the paddle shifts are hopeless and jerky..and instead of ferari producing a 360 stradale, i wish they could produce a front engined v12 2+2 like the aged 456gtm, and leave the top position to a spectacular supercar that can pose a threat to the lamborghini, porsche gemballa, tvr tuscan r.

"Have you ever though about what you get for the $188.000 Ferrari wants for that baby? How about a Lorinser SL6.2K with about 700bhp? Or a Porsche TechArt GTR with 660 bhp? And I swear that they?ll burn down the Ferrari at the track and on the street. But someguys really need the ""Hey look at me I?ve got a Ferrari, damn am I important or am I important?"" effect. Nothing against Ferrari, I like the 360 but this car is too expensive for it`s power. And the design is nice but if you think about the 360 this one is as boring as a VW Golf."""

try and find the Sbarro Challenge, it was a concept car back in the 80's. I was a real wedge of cheese in it's day! and the 575M is really getting on now i think. Much like the NSX and other sorts of cars, they just haven't moved on the game far enough, the Murcielago,Vanquish, SL and GT2 have surpassed this car in tech. The paddle shifters may be good in a PS game, but in real life they make the power delivery too jerky and the shifts aren't as fast as they could be. Lets just hope that the new age of Techno wizardry doesn't take the fun out of driving for us!

HAHAHAHAHA the lambo lookin like a slice of cheese! thats hilarious, but true. still a nice car tho! i would take it over the murcielago any day. ferrari has a long and great reputation for only building THE best, for the price of course. when your swimming in money and you have nothing to worry about AT ALL, then i urge you! BUY THIS!!

The people from Maranello have got serious competition from the Swabs. All of you might argue that Ferrari has its own unique bunch of clientelle, but I am to beleive that if a 300,000$ car delivers just a fraction more performance than another costing less than half as much, people are going to invest in the latter. Take the example of the CL600. 400kgs heavier, a smaller engine, almost same horsepower but 300nm more of torque, and costs 130,000 and is just 0.6 seconds slower in 0-60 times. All this with an auto-box. Benz could easily kick off 0.3-0.4 if they offered a standard stick. And yes, this car is a preety rare sight on the streets too.

So come on stop talking SH-T.

i surely think so. i was in a bus when i saw a 550 just zoming past the bus. At first glance i thought it was 446gt but then i realised it was a 2 seater and ut was a 550. It is absolutely beautiful!!! It was red and maybe that was what made it nice. Front engine ferraris rule!!

Unless you are a true car spotter, like myself, you probably won't be able to pick a 550 from a 575M on the street, save for the 19in. wheels. but why mess with a winning formula?
 paddle shifters.............
motorhead
21-9-2002
"are for handicapped poeple. there is actually no fun in using paddle shifters. It does not give you full driving commitment. Sure it changes gears extreamly quickly but the fun is not there!! Steptronic is still the best. I still prefer one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the gear stick. the problem with steptronic modes is that they come with an automatic box most of the time thus it will be at ""d"" most of the time. i think more cars should come with only steptronic boxes more often!!"""

hello, thanks for all the people commenting on my true statements, about the 557m. it is a good car....i would like to own one, but the 550 is a much better car to look at, to drive, and to handle. also blacksunshine, it is true most people are not going to own a ferrari, but everyone can dream about them, but i also think, ferrari are losing their way a bit, the 360 looks uglier than the 355, the 575 is a less complete car than the 550, but the enzo is great.

 My Exotic Dream Car...
2002 Z28 SS
16-8-2002
My original, my first dream car was a 1969 Camaro Z/28. Then I fell in love new LS1 powered f-bodies and ended up picking one up November of last year....a 2002 Camaro Z28 at the age of 19. I never paid any attention to exotic sports cars. I've always been a muscle car guy. That is until I saw the 550 Maranello up close and personal. It is the perfect exotic car when you think about it. At least in my eyes it is. It doesn't stand at too much to the point where you would never be able to drive it anywhere without the entire world noticing. I mean you don't want to attract too much attention to a car of this sort if you know what I mean, because then you are just asking for trouble. My new dream machine is a 2002 Ferrari 575M Maranello. Unfortuntely right now I'm just a broke 19 year old college student. But I am confident that one day I shall have my very own (-used :)LOL) 2002 575M Maranello. I may have to wait until it's ten-twenty years old to be able to afford one but I will own one. This Ferrari is the dream car of dream cars....

It's got the speed, the style, and the handeling (yes I said it, the handeling) and any test car driver or owner will atest to that. It's been called bench mark of GT cars, and the best GT ever made. ""This car can do this, that car can do that... blah blah blah"" WHO CARES? 99.9% of the people on this site arn't shopping for a new car and if they got the money to buy a car of this caliber what the hell makes you think they're ganna listen to you. Why must you complain? Over 90% of you will never own s Ferrari of any kind, and 95% of you don't drive any thing that could possibly compete with this. If you ask me, it all sounds like penis envy.  575m- not good

i understand the other comments that because its a ferrari, its good, and that it drives better than a supra. but this car doesnt even look good in red, so not really a proper ferrari, its got no engine note, its fast in a straightline, but cant handle corners well. whilst the fl transmission, with paddles on the steering wheel makes the car jerky, and if u buy one with the f1 paddles, you are a guinea pig for Ferrrai engineers. Buy a murcielago instead, or a secondhand F40

Regardless of what anyone thinks, I really like this car. I mean, look at it. It's the opitime of Italian GT greatness.Although Ferraris are my life, hence the name, I am a full fledged car nut and I'm only fifteen. Basically what I am trying to get across with all of this aimless babble is, styling is personal preference, a car fan should judge a car on it's performance aspects. Especially if it's got a screaming prancing horse engine between it's front fenders.

and also yes noone would notice a 575 maranello parked in a street other than car 'buff's. there is a black 550 maranello that parks everyday in the street outside my office (which also contradicts your belief that ferraris are never driven in the wet). and this 550 M hardly gets a look, when there are cheaper cars that are faster, and stand out more, the 575 M seems to lose the plot. I like Ferraris, the F50 , F355, 512tr, f40, and 456gtm are all great cars, but the 575 is meant to be ferraris mainstream flagship, ferrari already have a subtle GT- te 456. They should of made the 575 with a bit more flair , they even put cats on it, so you cant hear the engine noise!

"No one would notice? What are you smoking? More importantly, why arn't you sharing? This car has what your Mercedes and your Audi will always lack. That's style. I mean TRUE style. The SL55 AMG look so much like the standard SL500 that 85% of the world wouldn't be able to tell the differance. Some one passing it on on the street might say to themselves ""oh, a Mercedes sports car, that's nice"" but you park this Ferrari in that spot and people will stop in their tracks and say ""wait a minute, that's f---in Ferrari"" they'll stop, look at it, walk around it, look through the windows to see what the entirior looks like. And even if some one doesn't recognize it as a Ferrari right away, it's ganna make em stop and look at it, and draw them in enough so that they'll read the name plate. I don't know what your on dude... but with the exception of the original 300SL Gullwing of the 50's, Mercedes has yet to produce anything with half the style of a Ferrari. Don't get me wrong, the CLK-GTR was nice, but I'd still rather have an F50. Comparing Mercedes and Audi to a FERRARI? You must be stoned."""
 driving when its wet

This 'new' Ferrari, may sell in relative high numbers (in the supercar market) because its styling is very conservative. Yes it may have 520bhp, but park it on a street, and noone will notice. Plus when driving in the wet, they have messed up the suspension settings, so its almost undriveable in the wet. When mercedes new sl55 amg, has 513bhp, and Audi's rs6 has 460bhp . the high price, of the ferrari seems extorniate. So to cap it off, it looks like the 550, you cant drive it in the wet, there is no engine noise, like the 355, its too high priced
