W154 |

Very good piece with a lot of well researched information. It should be noted however that the cars predecessor, the W125, which is mentioned in the piece, was rated higher than reported in the article. The 1937 W 125 was rated at 646HP at the height of it's development. This car was the most powerful Grand Prix car ever built until the Turbo era arrived in the mid 1970's and Renault finally surpassed it. Also, I've never heard of either the Mercedes-Benz or Auto-Unions called "Silver Bullits", though the name is quite accurate. The name everyone refered to them as were "Silver Arrows" or "Silberpfeil" in German. White had been the German racing color, however in 1934 the Mercedes were a kilo too heavy. Team director Alfred Neubauer ordered the cars stripped of their paint and the calculation was precise. From then on Mercedes-Benz cars were silver in color. I don't know how Auto-Union adapted silver however. |
