Happy Birthday RX-8! I got mine 7/18/03, what a joyous day! Time certainly flies, but the feeling of enjoyment I get every time I slip behind the wheel hasnt diminished in the slightest. This is one of those rare cars with a rotary heart of gold and a soul of cheetah! OK, it's not my only car - I have beater for carrying furniture - OK it needs snow tires right out of the box if you drive in the snow (duh! - it's RWD sports car) - but it comes with appropriate, very sticky rubber that makes what I like to do - zipping around corners and slithering through country twists and turns just about perfect - what's wrong with that? And yes it generally gets 16-18 city, 21-23 highway so what a small price in my mind for the never-ending driving enjoyment and pride of ownership Ive received. In fact, given Mazdas lowball entry price for the 8, its absurdly low insurance rates compared with other sports cars (read 4dr sedan rates- really!) and the options and workmanship included, its a steal, and perhaps the most fun per mile Ive had in some 30 years (or so) of driving!. Ive gotten used to the attention the car gets where ever it goes, and I know why it gets it. Its a beautiful, exciting design, unique and exotic, practical and comfortable too. I look back every time I leave her, and I always enjoy the view!
 FLOODING

"Regarding the flooding issue, This may have been noted already but I did not read thru all of the posts! If your RX8 is or has flooded, you needed to get your PCM upgraded to version ""L"", or later. Also called the ""L flash"" This will lean out the fuel mixture at low rpm when the engine is cold. The plugs will also be replaces with hotter ones."
 250 Horses or Not?

Word's out that diagnostics were run on the RX-8 and it turned out that it was running less than 250 horses, around 200 or so. Several complaints were placed with the president of Mazda USA and those who complained were given the choice of either a full refund or an extended warranty. According to Mazda, the chip is programmed for a break period of 10,000 miles, meaning that the 250 hp won't be realized in the car until that break-in period is reached. Mazda had indicated that the reason the 250hp didn't show up on the diagnostics was that the break-in mileage had not been met. An enticing car, and buy, but personally I would wait.

have just ordered new high power rx8 in tittanium with leather from solent mazda portsmouth, as recommended by previous comment by Johnb.I live in birmingham so they are a little way from me, but they were by far the most helpful of all the dealers I called and are still able to get cars this year!! most dealers quoting early next year. they have also agreed to help with the travel cost when I pick up my new car. Give them a call (02392 674455)
 Very Interesting . . .

Very interesting indeed, and I definately like it. Yes all due respect to the immortal RX-7, but this is progress, 4 DOORS!! This baby can ferry the kids to school, run groceries, and with the addition of a canvas sheet over the rear seats, even take the dogs to the beach, can your wife possibly complain? Take a close look at the car's arches, they look flared, agressive, like it's been already been kitted. All it needs is a decent front bumper, which I'm sure Bomex will oblige us with, lowering springs, and a real adjustable rear wing, and it'll look ready to challenge the NSX and Supra as the prettiest Jap car as far as I'm concerned. Hmmmm, if only they'd made it a hatch-back, you know, given the rear window more of a slope, woulda made more bootspace for them big bags of dog food, LOL Someone complained about the lack of turbocharging? Well hey, HKS, Greddy, Trust, and XS make partial and/or complete turbo kits for Civics, and they're nothing special. This car could be the equal of the NSX in strait-line performance as is, at much less than half the NSX's price. I think it's more a question of who's gonna get their kit on the market first? If all else fails, Whipple make a dinky little 2.1 litre twin skrew PD supercharger for just over 1G US if memory serves (as opposed to almost 5G's US for a pair of Garrett ceramics), bigger fuel pump from Bosch maybe, and a Unichip if U're really into spending, and Bob's your uncle or in this case, RX-8's your daddy...

"Saw the RX8 at the NY auto show. I'm a practical kind of guy; I drive a Mitsu 3000GTXL. I like the 3000 but unfortunately they stopped producing it. You can't see a better looking, affordable car, inside and out, on the road today. The RX8 almost fills the bill, but that almost door in back makes the car kind of mickey mouse. It sure attracted a lot of attention at the show. PS I had a 1987 Toyota Supra and that was a winner in every way."

Thats true, I used to think like that too. But then I realized that you use the lights only when its hard to see: at night or in heavy rain or fog, and why would you want to go at the top speed in those conditions anyways. So I didn't mind the pop-ups and got an MR2 (it has pop-ups)
 pop up headlights

the drawback to pop up headlights is that they create unecessary amounts of drag/air resistance and can stop the air from flowing so smoothly over the body of the car which at high speeds, can have a negative effect on the handling. although the effect may be ever so small and not very noticeable, it is still there and should be minimized as much as possible if you intend at getting the most out of a car's potential

Nice, but I think that the third generation of RX-7 was the best-looking car ever. At least they should keep the headlights that pop up when on and hide when off. My car (91 MR2) has lights like that and I really like it
