Having owned a 'JPS' Europa Special since new, from May 1973 to the present day, I can say that it has given me a lot of fun and sometimes grief, with the former far outweighing the latter. It needs constant maintenance but it pays off handsomely. I have raced it in sprints and hill climbs and it is difficult to beat in its class and regularly sees off cars with 3 times its power.
 Twin Cam vs Renault Power

As former owner of an S2 and also a '72 Twin Cam, I can say that a good running Renault powered car is superior to an average TC.

Build quality on both was poor.

Fun factor was very high.

The car was not as fun as the S1 Elan I had though!

Some of the information on this website is incorrect. The U.S. Federal version of the '72 Europa Twin Cam came equipped with dual Zenith Stromberg carburettors and put out 127 bhp [See Miles Wilkins' book Lotus Twin Cam Engine], giving it a power-to-weight ratio on par with a modern BMW Z3, but with superior handling due to the weight distribution w/ a mid-engine design. The Europa Twin cam is an affordable and increasingly collectible exotic. Parts remain widely available and reasonably priced. Plan on conducting regular maintenance. If properly maintained, the Europa Twin Cam is fun and reliable even at 32 years old. Significantly, absolutely nothing of its vintage and price range draws as much favorable attention when driving around town. Infinitely fun to own and drive.

Had mine for 12 years.. Most memorable thing was the Truly Excreable build quality.. Replaced the Twin Cam engine rather soon as it was Low Power and always breaking.. despite all exagerated claims to the contrary. Installed a Renault Gordini Engine and Trans.. Wonderfull Power, twin 45's Tulip Valves, 8500 redline..virtually unbreakable..pulled redline in 5th rather too often.. a different age obviously, that engine surely earned it's keep. Lotus would have earned a far Different Reputation had they notbeen foolishly 'nationalistic' and supplied a Serious Renault engine instead. Car's handling was good.. not outstanding tho, rear and ride visibility simply did not exist, car gave nore than one hapless passenger Claustrophobia. Didn't really bother me much. Won most auto crosses entered.. but the competition was weak.. would be a different story against todays Civics etc. Body integrity was V poor, Door hinges with their Clever Friction Mounting were constantly working loose, fits were 'shoddy'. Interesting toy but as with most things.. they aquire a certain Nostalgia.. Selective Memory.
