Well your profile doesn't give us ANY clue where you are or how old you are.

Kind of important facts if you want any help.

Can list you dozens of cars in that price range that will be great fun - some may be too much for "first car 17 uear old" though

So please update your profile ( I'm going to get a record made that I can just play every time a noob comes on without a profile ) and post it here too so we can help. Otherwise we might think your in Outer Mongolia and that a YAK is you're best option. Damn, not got 4 seats - OK TWO YAKS

Assuming you're from North America, and 16-18...

    early Mazda Miata
    VW Mk3 Golf/GTI/Jetta 2.0 5 speed(not fast, but decently reliable and good on gas/insurance)
    Mk1 and 2 Toyota MR2
    late 80s Toyota Supra
    late 80s Mazda RX7
    BMW E30

There's a ton more, but most of them you'll kill yourself in. What, ultimately, are you looking for? Daily driver? Auto-Xer? Drag racer? Sedan, coupe, hatch? FWD, AWD, RWD?

He asked for 4 seats... that kind of reduces the list...

The Golf GTi MK1 would easily fit into all of his criteria. Its fast (faster than any of the later models), has 5 seats, good luggage space, reasonably reliable, well under budget so you can spend more cash on modifying it (ooh, fibreglass galore! ) and its actually quite cheap to run. Of course, if the insruance company dont like the GTi badge .. some of the standard petrols do just as well as the GTi. But it doesnt look too shabby standard .. id stick to engine mods if I were you but driver training is far better than any mods.

Fox-body Mustangs (preferably '87-'93) would be a great bang for the buck. Technically 4-seaters, but best suited for...occasional passenger duty. Still, they can be had cheap, have the best selection of go-fast parts short of a Chevy 350 I have ever seen, are easy to work on, respond well to tuning, and because of their boxy styling, most people not in the know pass them off as another ugly slow 80's car, since that's really what they looks like. Seriously though, it doesnt take much to be running mid-12's and still have it as a daily driver.

hehe, but he said he wanted "fast" cars...

Agree with the above post, a 240SX is probably your best bet.
But if this is your first car (which it probably is) its not best to start with a "fast" or performance car.

Better not be saying the Golf is slow .. if you are, have you ever been in one?

US versions of the Golf. remember ? So it's running on weak fuel and is heavily constrained with American emissions equipment

I can attest to a 2.0 liter Golf being slow. Fun in the turns, but it's got nothing down the straights. That's why I'm swapping a VR!
