as everyone has pointed out about the 300SL Gullwing, it was a chassie issue, the space frame for the coupe was made much more rigid then on the roadster version, this decision to make a much stiffer frame cause the doorsill to be raised to about knee level, there would have been room to make a convintional door, but it would have made the care a but less apealing when the doors were open, and removing part of the roof from the way of the drivers entry path didnt hurt either
as for the way they are being hinged now, as you see in the enzo, the entire side of the car opens up, and by the stature of the car, im sure its to make way for the driver
