Close call. Currently the M3 seems the bit more popular.
I wish BMW and Merc would bring out something similar to this again. 4 cylinders, high power and cutting edge handling. While not breaking the bank either. That, would be cool.

Allthough in reality, things aren't quite like that...Originally Posted by Vindesh17

Very tight this one, but in the end it seems the E30 M3 won the battle. Only just.
As they say, whether you win by 3 seconds or 3 hours, a win is a win.
I have 5 16 valves and I love them...but I might be a little partial because I am a Mercedes Technician
You have just dig out a very old debate.Originally Posted by RACER Z

A friend of mine still uses it's 89 190E 2.5 16v everyday, and the car has a fantastic performance. Very firm ride, but very alive car, like no other Mercedes I ever tried. I like the "wolf in sheep's cloth" style of it".
BTW: you seem to be the right person to answer this question: The 2.3 had an engine with a touch from Cosworth. The 2.5 had some work from them too, or not?
However being less powerful, is the 2.3 better or worst than the 2.5?
Thank you, and welcome to UCP.

I have driven the 2.5-16 EVO II myself several times. The downforce of this car at speeds arround 250 km/h is unbeliefable thanks to the large wings. The car produces 235 bhp and tops 250 km/h. Only 502 streetversions have been build. The owner of the EVO II wich I drove sold the car at 190.000 km. This car is still on the road and has done litlle over 200.000 km now.
As finishing touch god created the dutch.

On the Mercedes, a couple of weeks ago, a Mercedes dealer was called if he wasn't interisted in buying a 190E with 75 000kms and just a dent in the front bumper. The dealer said he is willing to offer him a 2000euro's and the guy that sold the merc was willing to take that offer.
When they went to get the car, it was a 190E EVO II The guy that sold it wasn't interested in cars, and the car belong to his dad that past away and he just sold it!
I do hope to find a deal like that someday!
Id take the 190e.
btw, im new. hi everyone
tough in general i like the M3 better but in this peticular case that mercedes is looking good. ill take the M3
though
Is this the Cosworth developed one?
It has and it always will be the Mercedes 190E EVO II. No other car even today can compare to the superior engineering, handling and performance of the 190E's. My brother drives three 190E's; a 2.3, 2.6 Sportline and a 2.5 16v Cosworth and they are simply the best!!!
IMO those were 2 of the best cars made in the history of german engineering, so is a draw for me, BUT, BMW historically made better cars, in my opinion, so the M3 wins by an inch
Being the unkown underdog is so much more appealing.
Lack of charisma can be fatal.
Visca Catalunya!
Luv the 190E. Just looks the part!
