    E39 M5 versus E60 M5

I've noticed that there is quite a mix of opinions on the face-lift of the M5 from its E39 to its E60 generation. I hope to gather the general preference for one or the other. Of course, I'm talking purely from a cosmetic/visual perspective.

Personally, I prefer the E39. It has the straight and smooth lines that is so much more elegant and sleeker than E60's overtly aggressive-curves.

Easy - E39 in the looks department.

A comparison between the E39 and E34 would leave me thinking though.

    E39, owns all.
the new bmw shape and style doesn't appeal to me personally i like the older styles the more straight lines. I agree with nist that the E39 looks way better... and we can always improve performance cant we ?

The E39 is the way to go. The E60 M5 for me is one of the biggest disappointments. With BMWs new styling direction and the new look for the Mercedes S Class, I find myself losing faith in manufacturers that I would have thought I could count on to consistently produce not just beautiful performing, but also beautiful looking vehicles.

    I'd rather take them both.

The E60 is a hideous car. It's ugly, soulless, and doesn't hit ANY buttons with me. The E39, on the other hand, is one car I will always have time for. Who needs the whole 0.3 secs extra in the 0-60 mph sprint anyway? Plus, it's all well and good saying that the M5 E60 can hit 205mph, but the cars are limited anyway

I voted for the E39 M5 because it looks better and it have a manual gearbox. But I know that for the new M5 is better for all the rest

E39 all the way, all the horsepower and fancy technology in the world couldn't sell me on the E60's design. Not to mention the lack of a manual, and with the money you'd save picking up an E39 you could easily get it over 500 horsepower.
i was waiting on a moment, but the moment never came. all the billion other moments, were just slipping all away. i must have been tripping, we're just slipping all away. just ego tripping.

Every BMW that has those headlights....definitely one of my favorite generations. E39 for me......I love that look.
