From the looks of that pic all the welding is done in it so it becomes a fixture. A jig is for holding something in place while you perform another operation to it like a drill positioning guide while you drill a series of holes.

no that is a jig, cyco. But so is what you described Just for a different purpose.

The tubes are laid in place, located by the metal jig and then the tubes are welded. The completed frame is then lifted out of the jig. For complex chassis there are often multiple jigs used.

do they use these things in large volume factories too ? Or do they let the robots weld part after part to it ?

the earliest pressed steel frames contributed seriously to the rigidity of the cars at the beginning of the 20th century.

How are such chassis produced, how is the steel treated to turn it into 'pressed' steel eventually?

ALL welding needs some form of suport for the pieces while the weld or spot welds are done. So even in robot factories there are "jigs".
With robots they are often multi-stage jigs which come in and out as required around the parts coming togehter.

all modern monocoque cars continue the process.
Basically it's a HUGE press with a mold for the final shape fo the steel panel.
Flat ususally 18 guage steel goes between the moulds and then pressed together. The upper and lower moulds have only the width fo the steel as gap when closed and focre the steel into shape.
