Well, I've fallen in love with the McLaren. It is the greatest street car I've ever driven. The McLaren is deceivingly fast, and it isn't until you approach a corner at 140 mph that you think, 'Gee whiz, maybe I'm going a bit quicker than perhaps I should be.' It drives just like a car on slick tires, without the jerkiness to it. The car is very well balanced, and the gear lever very positive. The brakes are very hard, and you have to use a lot of pedal effort. The McLaren's linear powerband is amazing. It's a serious car with a power-to-weight ratio close to that of my IMSA race car. — Steve Millen

The McLaren F1 is a glorified and overrated car. While it may have been the fastest in a straight line, it was definately not the best handling car. The F40, contrary to popular belief, was faster 0-60 and a much better handling car.

It's always funny to see McLaren F1 fanboys clinging to it so hard. Just because it can go 240+mph doesn't make it the best ever.

How many GT races has a F40 competed in and won ?
    How many Le Mans ?

The F40 is the ultimate fanboy semi-rich mans knob compensator

PS: It's worth checking thread and post dates to avoid resurrecting old threads, old discussions left in the past. BTW Welcome to UCP. Cheers

Not quite, but the F40 did go from 1987-1992, of which it passed 1 year before the F1 was born.

The F40 Vs. the 959 seems more of a better comparison itself.

The F40's Twin-turbo V8 did not make anywhere close to 3.2 0-60 times. It was about .5 seconds off of the McLaren.

    No.

It's the fact that almost every single component of the car was meticulously engineered specifically to be the optimum.

The fact that its performance was greater than not only cars of its day, but is still greater than current supercars.

The fact that a mildly tweaked version entered GT racing and absolutely wiped the floor with the race preppared F40s.

I guess that means all this nonsense about the handling being shit is just propaganda from ignorant people, who think that they are "smart" because they brag about how they "know" the F1 is inferior because they know nothing about it, and in fact the only thing they "know" about any cars are some performance figures they've read, and a poster they've put up on their wall...

and got a near clean sweep at its Le Mans debut...

    Yeah, totally overrated.
    Thanks for all the fish

You said exactly the opposite of true. While McLaren was an easy car to master, and drove like a muscular Elise, the F40, although being fantastic, was a beast of a car. Very hard to handle, specially when the turbos spool up half way through a corner.

I'm a Ferrari fan, but on this comparison theres no possible argument. The F40 was a great car anyway. But not half as talented and technologicaly refined as a McLaren F1.

the mclaren f1 shouldnt be compared its in a different league with regard to technology used but the Michelotto F40 LMs would be a much better test for the f1
