Rumours suggest that Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio is planning to buy up Smart. DaimlerChrysler already reorganizated Smart last year and is planning to quit with it if it won't make profit in 2006.
Piaggio says to be interested in Smart's low-emission gas and diesel engines.

I read about Piaggio working on a diesel engine for their next Vespa. So that interest on diesel engines doesn't surprise me

Piaggio make engines far too big and powerful for Smart car technology.
