    RIP: My forum..is closed.

    http://www.autoconveyance.net/engine_block/index.php?

It's been up for 5 months, and has changed dramatically...going from a slow free-ware board software to Invision Power Board. Had the great feature "attachments", just like here, and the skin and layout was clean. Never got any members, but I didn't advertise it much.

It's getting tough for me, nor do I have the time, and since there were no active members, I can't trust anyone to run the board while I'm away.

Has anyone else tried running a forum, or am I the only unsuccessful formitter?

    Yes.
Any medium will fail unless it has a clear purpose and audience.
I am responsible for a few automotive club ones.
"build it and they will come" really only works in Hollywood movies ( and baseball )

I've ran a few forums. My most successful one was for friends of mine to post as we've all gone our seperate ways. Thats different though. The audience is pretty much already there. It eventually died when I could no longer afford the webspace. The only problem I ever have is to do with traffic or money; something that I think applied to most forum admins.

I've run a political forum since November 1997. It's had over 450,000 messages posted since inception and gets an average of about 60 unique visitors a day.

I guess that makes it a success but it's also like running a daycare center and herding cats at the same time. But politics in the US has become little more than mudslinging anyway so I guess it just reflects reality.

There are times I've wanted to quit and in fact, I did pull the plug on the place for about 3 months a couple years ago when people just got too obnoxious for me to tolerate but I started it up again and I'm glad I did. Now I've learned to just ignore the idiots.

Heh, I've got a little forum hosted by Yabbers, which I started as a way for me and my friends to chat when we're not at school. But since then I've posted links here and there and gotten a few new members. Still a small forum (just hit 3000 posts! yay :P) but I like it
