    Why is 55 Highlighted?

I've noticed in some cars that 55 mph is highlighted, like in my Friends '93 Mustang, which goes 5-15-25, etc., the 55 is lighted up red, while the rest are green. I've seen other cars do the same, is there a reason why?

My truck (1991 Ranger) has it, probably because there weren't any speed limits over 55 when it was made.

It was federal speed limit for a while and they required it be highlighted on the speedo... Same thing with speedometers that topped out at 85 mph...

Yep, for the cheap French that don't want to pay for the 130km/h highways.
My Clio doesn't have it, I think... Never noticed it. I drive 140-150 anyway so it doesn't really matter.

In our Pug 206 the lines for 50, 90 and 130 are red, the others are white.

Those are the French speed limits.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

Old japanese cars used to have a clickíng noise that starts when you hit 80mph
Power, whether measured as HP, PS, or KW is what accelerates cars and gets it up to top speed. Power also determines how far you take a wall when you hit it
    Engine torque is an illusion.

Singapore taxis have bells that ring at 50.
It's really funny to be driven from the airport with this constant bell goign off as they blast along ignorign the speed limits.
At least it's not as annoying as the stupid belt-warning beepers we are now subjected to because American owners dont seem to know how to drive safely ( well beign fair, it's the LAWYERS that are the problem as they'll sue for the idiots )
