how big should you go ??

    tire sizes ...

we've all seen those rediculous 22 inch rims on tiny ass cars with tires that have like half a centimeter of sidewall ... that's bad

the thing is, you dont want tiny ass rims either cuz you cant fit a decent brake system in it, bigger rotors means more brake torque (assuming the tyre's grip isnt the bottle neck)

idealy shouldnt you have the smallest rims possible that dont interfere with your braking system to lower weight ??

moving up a size means reducing the sidewall height, although this does mean less flex and less deformation of the contact patch, it does make the handling at the limit alot more difficult to control (no/less warning at the transition between grip and slide)

although the area of the contact patch doesnt affect grip, the shape (which dictates how and where the patch deforms) does, what's the ideal shape of the contact patch ??

    please advise
matra im lookin at u :P

well 18" suit almost everything and they are a balance between the looks and ability.

How big do you really need the brakes to be, Bentley are fitting 420mm rotors to the new Continental GT but do you really need something that size on a smaller lighter car?

i'd go as big as i had to in order to fit sufficient brakes.
and i figure, if i need 22" rims to fit big enough brakes i need to lose some damn weight.

as big as i want to...? its a personal thing, how many people do you think whose main aesthetic point is rims care about the handling at the limit?

I personally wouldn't go anything bigger than 12x5s on my car, there's no point in going wider than that and anything bigger than that is too expensive to be worth it and doesn't really look any good/better anyway. The current 10" jobbies a little small looking though.

haha i thought he meant like, how big is the biggest rims should be.

for me...depending on the size of the car 17-19", or an SUV i would get 22" painted rims, like so, actually a possibility, so let me know if it looks stupid/good

I wouldn't mind some 14" or 15 " wheels to get a little extra room inside the wheel, with the big brake kit is really tight. Right now I run 175/60 13 yokohamas, they are pretty beefy tire, which is a good thing since Lime Rock is a really rough track, it'd still probably be ok with a 14" or 15" wheel tho.

For the truck, I've been thinking about getting some 19" r/t, right now I have 255/65 16's, the sidewall is huge, I wouldn't mind loosing a little bit of it.

20 is really pushing it on cars and should be max size, 19 is pretty good 18 is ideal 17 is pretty good 16 is getting small.

    28" bad boys from Giovanni

that's how big I'd go on a Hummer ..but otherwise i think 20" is sweet but of course it depends on the size of the car as well, you wouldn't put 20" on a civic, however on a Porsche..
