The nights have turned cooler here, hanging out around the freezing mark for a low temp, so by the time I get out of work to head home at 23:00, it's a struggle to get good FE. Considering putting my "grille block" (one side of a cardboard box which nestles nicely behind the grille) back in tonight. Having said that, I am hoping I can pull out a 40mpg performance tonight.

I have decided to set my next goal as getting under 6l/100km, about 39,27mpg.

    ...

I should start trying to record my work kilometerage and fuel consumption.

I found it's a nice little hobby. Keeps me focused on driving. And gives me something to challenge myself with. I originally started it to save some gas $$, but on its own it's not really worth it unless you adopt some of the more extreme methods. I have found the personal challenge to be particularly rewarding, though, which has kept me plugging away at it.

Made my goal of staying under 6l/100km, and recorded a personal best. 39,68mpg, which translates to 5,92l/100km. 443,7 miles on 11,182 gallons.

I get between 11.5 and 12.5 across a day with the R class, according to the computer.

Echo's still holding up with over 39mpg about halfway through this tank. I'm always knocking at 40mpg but have never been able to get an entire tank that high save for when I make an extended highway trip.

49,3mpg (4,77l/100km) into work today, tank stands at 40,4mpg (5,82l/100km) with about 5 gallons left. Pushing a projected range of about 460 miles (740km) on this tank.

That's ridiculously good gas mileage there.

It's surprising how well older cars do, especially when they're lighter and less safe.

The 1NZFE is pretty well-designed for fuel economy, sacrificing NVH to do so. But it is more or less at the limit of what it's capable of already. Most modern cars which are rated lower - and would indeed yield lower mileage driven on the same route in a normal person's hands - are nonetheless able to be stretched further in skilled "hypermiler" hands. The Echo occupies a sweet spot for me because I use only the most basic techniques available and the Echo responds better to those. Still, the Echo only has a .29Cd with a small frontal area and as you say is pretty light. I do wish it had a manual trans though, that would be an easy 2-5mpg jump for me.

Do you hypermile? I mean, I've seen people do ridiculous things such as turn the engine off and coast for long straights. I don't think that's a good thing as that'll cut your power steering and brakes.

Throttle management is what I try to do- I keep up with traffic, but I do end up going almost 75 mph, as traffic never really stays below 65. So I end up between 65 and 75. I get around 21 mpg, but the TL is not a particularly fuel efficient car anyway.
