    Yellow Headlamps

So we've all noticed that in road races and rallyes they use yellow headlamps sometimes. My question is, how do they make those, spray over the clear headlamps, place a film over the lamp, place a shell around the bulb or other. Because for my brothers '86 jetta we painted the inside foglamps yellow and it looks great but it doesn't look very smooth, you can tell that that surface is rough. I attached a picture of it from this past winter. So my question is....what do they use?

*also, we bought the bulb covers for our Ninja zx-6r and those work most excellent, very noticable, pretty cool. It's just a shell that goes over the bulb inside the headlight assembly.

If they use in race cars, they must be better than xenon headlamps, but for some reason yellow headlamps are banned in spain, I have only seen some +20 year old BMWs with them.
Life is too short to stay, race!

They were actually mandatory in France time ago. IIRC it was because they were better with fog.

This actually originated during WW2, IIRC.

French resistance fighters covered their headlight lenses in Yellow so that, when they attacked German cars late at night, they didn't accidently attack their countrymen.

    After that it just stuck.

Thats almost ridiculous enough to believe. The French would do that.

Why is that ridiculous? can you tell what cars coming up towards you just from it's headlights?

I happen to think it's minorly intelligent.

Is this 100% authentic vehicle pictured a good example? (note yellow lights)

    Great ruban myth

BEFORE WW2 automotive engineers were debating the value of yellow fog lamps......

Although there are still many lamps on the road using yellow light, it seems to be becoming recognized that there is no filter, which, when placed in front of a lamp, will improve the penetration power of that lamp."
Early thoughts were that yellow light "penetrated" fog better

Yeah, I always wondered that. Do yellow lights really penetrate fog better?

    How about other colors?

But this is a spanish registered vehicle. Maybe being close to France the idea crossed the border or something.

I know that you can "smoke" taillamps by mixing black with clearcoat and just spraying on so i'm assuming you could do the same with yellow.
