    smokers (at least here in belgium) provide the state with huge a tax income.
    that's the only financial upshot I could find really

    That's mainly because Cigarettes are a very inelastic good, similar to things like gasoline and bread. A lot of people will buy and smoke cigarettes regardless of the price (assuming it's not absurd) because it holds great necessity to them. This way, the government can continually tax it because the general population will not refrain from buying. If you started placing huge taxes on McDonald's or fast food in general, people would be easily put-off by the new prices and the resurgance of home-cooked meals and the health craze would begin.

    I personally smoke when I drink alcohol.
