currently I drive a 94' mk3 gti 16v, the car has a thread going on the forums.
Yesterday I saw an ad for a clean 82' mk1 gti.
So I asked if he wanted to trade. Seller replied that it could be discussed.
Is this worth it or am i mad?

As your weekend car maybe, if you like VW so much. But don't do it otherwise. A car that old is bound to have problems and if you depend on it it'll ruin you.

If it is original and not abused it will be a classic. Buy it to covet, not as a daily driver.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

it will be kind of used as a daily driver. But it would be pampered.
I thought about it like this : it probably will hold its value, its a fun car , an icon , and its only a 1.8 with 112 hp , so it would be cheaper to insure , and I kinda hoped for cheaper parts , as i am now having to pay for vr6 parts

If it aint broke, dont fix it.
12 years is alot of difference, i'd be cautious.
so I can conclude that I'm not really mad , but not verry sane either

yeah your probably right, when your value is that low its hard not to hold it
just kidding.
but seriously, your nuts guy. i dont know much about vw's but i do know that a 94 car will be superior to an 81 in pretty much every single aspect.
how many miles are on this car you want? and how many does yours have? see if he'll trade you and thrown in some cash too maybe that will make it a little better. unless you have a love affair with 81 vw's for some strange reason this seems like a pretty illogical decision to me. the goal in life is to trade up, not down.
A woman goes to the doctor to figure out why she is having breathing problems...The doctor tells her she is overweight. She says she wants a second opinion...the doctor says, "your ugly".
The original Golf GTi Mk1 is rapidly becoming an icon. (in Europe at least) There are few left that have not been mistreated by boyracers, (the one to the right of the pic shown in post 1 should be avoided), and many have fallen victim to rust. If this one is in a proper state of maintenance and relatively unabused, the chances of an increase in value are realistic. However, if you want to use it as a daily driver, check whether it has a catconverter, otherwise you might get banned from city driving pretty soon...

Parts are cheap. Parts are also hard to come by. Over here, anyway.

In europe Volkswagens are reliable cars. There are a lot of volkswagen dealerships and part stores in belgium, right? I'd say if its not rusted you'd get it a.s.a.p. Its a good car wich could only increase in value. So when you have already bought it and you dont like it, you could always sell it on for more money...
If it's in good enough condition, I'd get it.
If its in good condition it should be a great buy and a great asset. For a daily driver you will probably need it to handle it with extra care, this sign applies:

Miscommunication seems to be a direct result of misplaced, text based sarcasm.
Are you mad?
For that particular model, yes.
Keep looking.
