How do you feel about replicas?

This may have been asked before, but how do you feel about replicas? I'm considering a 250 GTO built off a Datsun 260z, but the replica deal kind fuddles me. I love the lines of the GTO, and I would never try to replicate it personally, or try to say it was real, but it certainly would be fun to own. I would probably put some big wheels and tires on it, and the car already has a 350 V8.

I believe cars like this should look identical (this being the only reason to have a replica) but can have different wheels, running gear etc.

i think the kit cars like suka's are worth while, insurance, costs, enjoyment in building it. But with rep's such as 250 gto, f40, f50...it is just not right!

I have no interest in them.
I would be the same as dating a woman that looks like Britney Spears and taking pics to pretend I was with Britney Spears.

Let me make a comparison then:

it would be like being with a girl as attractive as brittany, but a brunette and much less high-maintenance. I wouldn't be telling anybody I was with brittany, but some people might think it. Get it?

    le car in question:

ps, they tend to be pretty good replicas, but not perfect. The datsun is a pretty close match to the gto...again, I don't know if I would even keep the ferrari badges on...but the car is still beautiful nontheless

I agree that supercar replicas tend to fall way short. The only good ones are the domestics (shelby, daytona coupe, gt40). Most of the italian exotics are too far removed from the orignals that there's no point. Some of the old countaches were nice looking, but I think I would do something to mine if I owned one to make it distinctively different.

I don't think 'replicas' look good at all.

I have seen 'recreations' which are fabulous reproductions of the originals.

Two that I saw recently were a Bentley Blower 4.5 and a Testarossa 1959.

    SOme replicas are excellent.

After all the GT40 on the Knockhill photo series is stunning.
A kit car and a replica.

However, the US market has spawned a huge number of platic body kits to bolt on to the Fiero and I find most of them REALLY naff.
    Likewise some MR2s.

One in the Scottish Kit cars is a Ferrari rep and at any show MOST people think it really is a Ferrari. It makes the owner happy and I can see the appeal for the look.

Liek all things there are good and bad, I'll try and post some good

After all Caterhams, Westfields, Tigers, Locosts, et al are really just Lotus 7 reps with update mechanics, engines and design details Within that range some are good and some are bad. Visiting a kit car show in the UK and seeing the abortions that have been bujilt based on the Locost design would convince you never to do it andyet some are excellent.

I think not to concentrate on the bad examples might give a more balanced undesrtanding of the appeal.

mix feelings . because i can't treat the Fiero based Countach .. with a Proteus C-Type .. for example . Jay Kay own a Favre GTO replica wich has a 4.0 litre Columbo V12 .. this is something very similar to the real thing . off course it can't have the racing history of some GTO . but still . very close .. and best thing next to one ..

I prefer original cars, I'd rather have a regular Fiero than one turned into a Ferrari.
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.
