Man's last US lotto ticket wins $A14m

On the day that Donald Peters died, he unknowingly provided financial security for his wife of 59 years and their family.

Peters bought two Connecticut Lottery tickets at a local store on November 1 as part of a 20-year tradition he shared with his wife Charlotte.

Later that day, the 79-year-old retired hat factory worker suffered a fatal heart attack while working in his yard in Danbury.

On Friday, his widow cashed in one of the tickets: a $US10 million ($A14.23 million) winner which, in her grief over her husband's death, she had put aside and almost discarded before recently checking the numbers.

"I'm numb," Charlotte Peters, 78, said at Connecticut Lottery office.

She does not yet know what she will do with the money.

"I've always wanted a Corvette, but I don't think I'll buy one. I'll stick to a small car. I might go to Mohegan Sun," she said, referring to the casino in Connecticut.

"I'm going to go home and sit and think."

The Peters children think their father would have appreciated the irony.

"He'd be very mad, he just passed away and she won a lot of money," said Brian Peters, one of the couple's three children.

    "He'd say, 'Figures!'"

The Peters had three children and two grandchildren.

He won $10 million US during the world's financial crisis, and he dies before he can enjoy any of the money. Sad Story.

Maybe a proper burial with the money first would be a good idea, instead of buying that Corvette or going to Mohegan Sun.

Just kidding, pretty sad, but that woman sounds quite greedy.

How the hell do you get the impression of greed? Theres more references there that shes still grieving than what she's considering putting the money towards.

Buy a Corvette and go to a casino. Classy.

If you both haven't noticed, I added a just kidding to it.

But the fact that you're thinking about a Corvette and the casinos isn't a really good thing.

Yes, but she's saying she's not going to get a corvette, just stick to a small car. Like my mom, with 20 million dollars, she'd keep her (tiny) house and jeep liberty, but maybe get a little car to go with it. Other than that she'd get some more horses and maybe go to the fabric store more often. That's it. So she'd have $19.8 million left over 5 years later with no plans for it. Sigh. All these people with no imagination.

It would be interesting to do a follow up story in five years to see if she still has some of the money left over.

Anyone ever seen Waking Ned Devine? This unfortunate story sounds so similar.

You added "just kidding" before commenting on her apparent greed, implying you were only joking about the previous sentence and not the whole comment.
