Its a WW2 era 5.2 litre (260 lb) air cooled Lycoming flat-4.
Bought @ scrap value in 1954 then owner re-engineered including a customised FI system and mounted inverted (upside down) into an also self-designed & built two seater GP racing car which in 1958 did the SS 1/4 mile in 12.7 secs .. on 165mm width Michelin X tyres!
Incredibly it was not trailered to race meetings, but instead driven to and from, including the Grand Prix events!
During the 1956/57 season the car had completed approximately 700 miles racing and 5,000 miles on the road.
"The Lycoming was a really delightful road car and my drives around the country were more enjoyable than the racing."
'readers should appreciate that this was a tractable, self starting, roadworthy and street registered two-seater sports car, capable of everyday use. It did not require to be transported to distant events and in fact provided transport for the competing driver. For a time the car was his main means of transport and as such took him shopping for its own requirements.'
Six years of GP competition from 1956/57 until retired in 1962 then 'unbeatable' in Sports Car & Hillclimb categories through 1968.
Much revered Scottish driver the multiple F1 World Champion Jim Clark signals his approval in 1966 (car also raced by Bruce McLaren).
