80 bhp may be something unpopular, 300 bhp in a 2,5 tons behemoth is senseless.
It also depends on the age on the engine. Remember the times when 80 hp were much...? Those cars used unreal amounts of fuel. It's all about refinement.

Actually, cars are getting thirstier apparently.

It's a combination of stricter emissions, more weight and worse aerodinamics.

Of course I was speaking for similarly designed engines, therefore from the same year/period.

back in the days it wasn't only about engines though, the whole car was less efficient as a whole, from the gearbox to the tires (which make a huge and underestimated difference).

As Ferrer implied though, cars now are much heavier and "complicated" providing weird mileage figures. With all those gizmos running all the time, or even just carried on, you're going to use more power just to move your car even at lower speeds. Some dudes go crazy when Porsche installs some CF seats on their "special edition" cars, saving a few kg, while you could save even more than 20 kg getting read of the air conditioning system. Hey, that' not something cool to do though

Props to Porsche for offering lithium ion batteries though. Not going to balance the Cayenne anyway.

Also, this blob-shaped or egg-shaped cars (as Fleet would call them... ) aren't very aerodynamic apparently. Seats clearly suffer from this, as well as Alfa Romeos. Maybe it's a latin thing...

There was an interesting comparison in a blog I read often, and it was that when it came to GME petrol cars those were actually getting thirstier. Of course 90's GME cars were especially aerodynamic and their engines were very good, but still shows you that progress isn't all that good always.

This doesn't mean that engines aren't more efficient, they are, but this engineer achievements are made useless by all the extra weight and the design which ruins aerodynamics.
